A sur­vey of the de­vel­op­ment of ar­chi­tec­tural and scenic styles in the phys­i­cal struc­ture of the­atre from its be­gin­nings in an­cient Greece to its most cur­rent forms. Em­pha­sis placed on the styl­is­tic in­flu­ences of the­o­reti­cians and artis­tic move­ments. In­ter­dis­ci­pli­nary Op­tion: This course is a con­ver­sa­tion be­tween the­ater his­tory and ar­chi­tec­ture. As such, the work in class fo­cuses on pur­pose-built and adapted spaces for live per­for­mance. Each week we will ex­am­ine his­tor­i­cal the­atre spaces and tech­nolo­gies in the con­text of pre­vail­ing cul­tural and so­cial forces in order to bet­ter un­der­stand au­di­ence/stage re­la­tion­ships. To ful­fill the in­ter­dis­ci­pli­nary re­quire­ments for this course, spe­cial­ists from ar­chi­tec­ture, art his­tory, and per­for­mance tech­nol­ogy will guest lec­ture six times over the course of the se­mes­ter.Stu­dents will learn skill-sets from ar­chi­tec­ture tech­nol­ogy: GIS map­ping and hand sketch­ing. A survey of the development of architectural and scenic styles in the physical structure of theatre from its beginnings in ancient Greece to its most current forms. Emphasis placed on the stylistic influences of theoreticians and artistic movements. Interdisciplinary Option: This course is a conversation between theater history and architecture. As such, the work in class focuses on purpose-built and adapted spaces for live performance. Each week we will examine historical theatre spaces and technologies in the context of prevailing cultural and social forces in order to better understand audience/stage relationships. To fulfill the interdisciplinary requirements for this course, specialists from architecture, art history, and performance technology will guest lecture six times over the course of the semester.Students will learn skill-sets from architecture technology: GIS mapping and hand sketching. 2 cl hrs, 2 lab hrs Ex­plores de­sign and type sen­si­bil­i­ties, chal­leng­ing stu­dents to strengthen their cre­ative and vi­sual aes­thet­ics. With em­pha­sis on sen­si­tiv­ity to type, ex­er­cises in­te­grate type within a va­ri­ety of dif­fer­ent medi­ums in­clud­ing page lay­outs as well as ki­netic de­sign. Pre­req­ui­site: COMD 1257

2 cl hrs, 2 lab hrs Explores design and type sensibilities, challenging students to strengthen their creative and visual aesthetics. With emphasis on sensitivity to type, exercises integrate type within a variety of different mediums including page layouts as well as kinetic design. Prerequisite: COMD 1257

This course in­tro­duces stu­dents to core con­cepts in the graphic com­mu­ni­ca­tions field in­clud­ing ty­pog­ra­phy, color the­ory, de­sign and pro­duc­tion ter­mi­nol­ogy, re­pro­duc­tion processes, file for­mats and sub­strates. Dur­ing the se­mes­ter, stu­dents will com­plete three pages of their own ePort­fo­lio web site. Lec­tures will pro­vide stu­dents with a his­tor­i­cal per­spec­tive of the graphic com­mu­ni­ca­tions field as well as dis­cussing cur­rent prac­tices and fu­ture trends.

This course introduces students to core concepts in the graphic communications field including typography, color theory, design and production terminology, reproduction processes, file formats and substrates. During the semester, students will complete three pages of their own ePortfolio web site. Lectures will provide students with a historical perspective of the graphic communications field as well as discussing current practices and future trends.

Stu­dents will learn ad­vanced tech­niques for de­sign, il­lus­tra­tion, and pro­duc­tion on the com­puter using vec­tor graph­ics. Stu­dents are ex­posed to pro­fes­sional tools using soft­ware such as Adobe Il­lus­tra­tor on the Mac­in­tosh op­er­at­ing sys­tem.

Students will learn advanced techniques for design, illustration, and production on the computer using vector graphics. Students are exposed to professional tools using software such as Adobe Illustrator on the Macintosh operating system.
