In order to become innovative and daring technological leaders in your chosen fields, it is imperative each of you develop a broad understanding of the economic, social, and cultural forces shaping emerging technologies over and beyond the basic mechanics of how these technologies work. Without this foundation, narrow technical background may result skill sets that easily become out of date. The accelerated pace of change merits facility with discussions of the historical, social and cultural contexts of technological evolution. This foundation course will prepare you for research in the emerging technologies of your chosen fields by supplying the necessary background theory, context and methodology. This foundation course will prepare you for research in the emerging technologies of you chosen fields by supplying the necessary background theory, context and methodology. Since the course does not require particular technological skills and experience, students of diverse technological programs will be able to take part in it.

MTEC1003 – Media Computation Skills Lab – Spring 2015

MTEC1003 – Media Computation Skills Lab – Spring 2015

This class will cover some basic tools, skills, and best practices that support programming. Topics include source code management, basic front-end technologies (HTML/CSS, JavaScript), Unix command line tools, and basic server administration. MTEC1005 Tangible Media SP2015

MTEC1005 Tangible Media SP2015

The goal of this course is to let students experiment and create electronic circuits and 3D prints. The class is divided into two main topics: Electronics and 3D Printing. Each topic while have several modules. After each module students will have created a circuit, model, or 3D print. Students will be introduced how to create physical interfaces by learning how to program the Arduino micro controller. They will learn how to use sensors to translate physical interaction to output a sensory experience. Finally, they will design and print 3D models. Students will learn basic fabrication, modeling techniques, and processes used in 3D printing. Then they will learn how to create models using Blender and learn how to print them.

ENT 1190 Introduction to Film and Video Production (Terao) Fall 2015

ENT 1190 Introduction to Film and Video Production (Terao) Fall 2015

An introduction to the basic components and practices of preproduction and production methodologies for content creation in commercial video and film production. Through lectures, reading assignments, screenings and practice, students will learn the basics of all stages of production inclusive of the processes of forming and working in production management teams, creating effective production aesthetics in pre-production and production stages, scriptwriting and storyboarding, cinematography aesthetics (lighting and camera), and design and graphics functions in editing. Students will explore several modes of communication such as commercials, public service announcements, fictive works, documentary and journalism and learn how to convey information and messages to a target audience.

MTEC2250 Tangible Media Skills

MTEC2250 Tangible Media Skills

In this course students will spend the semester designing and building a prototype. The class is broken up to 3 sections: 3D Design and Production, Electronics, and PCB design. In the 3D Design section, students will be introduced to fabrication and modeling using 123D Design and Inkscape. They will fabricate their designs using laser cutters and 3D Printers. In the next section, we will be using PIC microcontroller to add interaction to our prototypes. Finally, we will transfer our circuits from our breadboard to a PCB. We will use the EagleCAM software to design our board, which we will then get printed. At the end of the semester students will have produce a full working prototype with an enclosure, functioning electronics, and assembled PCB board.
