Course Description Advanced typographic design principles. Typographic applications for web design, print and motion graphics are explored, as well as integration of design and production in the laboratory.

Internship in Communication Design Assignment to field work/study situations of approximately 25 plus hours per week at a graphic arts-related internship site approved by the department internship director. Sites may be in areas such as advertising, printing, corporate communications or publishing. Students keep a log/journal to be shared in group seminars/discussions. Supervision is by faculty and by the job supervisor. Students will be required to keep a learning journal of their internship in the form of a blog using Open Lab.

Vector-based animation and interactivity are important presentation tools for engaging the user. The goal of this course is to teach the development of time-based animation skills. It will 232 introduce the concepts of the timeline and vector art for use on the World Wide Web using software such as Flash. This course is a prerequisite for the Interactive Art Direction and Interactive Interface Design courses.

This is a course in effective essay writing and basic research techniques and an introduction to library research methods. Readings from distributed handouts and the textbook, The Place Where We Dwell, are assigned for classroom discussion and as models for essay writing.

This course introduces students to core concepts in the media field including color theory, design and production terminology, reproduction processes, file formats and substrates. Lectures will provide students with a historical perspective of the media field as well as discussing current practices and future trends.
