This is a second-level writing course in our three-level sequence. It connects reading and writing by asking you to read texts, discuss them, and write papers about them.

Principles of three-dimensional design. Course covers an analysis of form and space. Topics include: hollow forms both geometric and organic; architectonic organization of space; light and shadow; geometric solids; the modular unit; form and structure in nature; linear forms with membranes; movement. Applications to packaging, architecture, sculpture and environmental design and graphics. Materials and inherent properties governing their use in form and space.

Internship in Communication Design (Summer Intensive) Assignment to field work/study situations of approximately eight to 20 plus hours per week at a graphic arts-related internship site approved by the department internship director. Sites may be in areas such as advertising, printing, corporate communications or publishing. Students keep a log/journal to be shared in group seminars/discussions. Supervision is by faculty and by the job supervisor. Students will be required to keep a learning journal of their internship in the form of a blog using Open Lab.

We will touch on the history of info graphics and will find ways they are appearing in new technology. This course is thought-provoking, encouraging students to stretch their minds into new territory while drawing upon basic skills of typography, color and composition.
