This is an introductory course designed to explore the basic tools, techniques and principles of
drawing. Students will develop an understanding of the five basic perceptual skills of drawing:
The Perception of Edges, The Perception of Spaces, The Perception of Relationships, The
Perception of Light and Shadow, and The Perception of the Whole Form. This will be continued
with an-depth study of classical drawing principles critical to achieving realism in drawing.
Concepts such as Composition, Proportion and Perspective will be covered. Students will learn
to further render forms through analysis of light and shadow and by utilizing the 5-value system.

You’ll like assignments when we’re done with this semester.

In this course, students will learn concepts and applied theories of digital media and the two fundamental graphic forms: raster and vector digital images and will define and describe similar and contrasting factors in each kind of image. The comparison will also recommend the best practice, specification or standard for using a specific form in a specific application. The course will include basic digital imaging terminology, and techniques including size, resolution, color space and file elements, measurements and file formats. Students are introduced to digital imaging concepts through software such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator on the Macintosh operating system. Scanning and digital photography are integrated into lesson plans.

Topics include: hollow forms both geometric and organic; architectonic organization of space; light and shadow; geometric solids; the modular unit; form and structure in nature; linear forms with membranes; movement. Applications to packaging, architecture, sculpture and environmental design and graphics. Materials and inherent properties governing their use in form and space.

institutional illustration. A variety of materials will be introduced through lectures and
demonstrations for use on assignments such as: pencil, pen and ink, brush, colored pencil,
