COMD Com­mu­ni­ca­tion De­sign In­tern­ship Co­or­di­na­tion Site

This site is de­signed to help you find field­work/study sit­u­a­tions of ap­prox­i­mately eight hours per week at an in­tern­ship site ap­proved by the De­part­ment In­tern­ship in­struc­tor such as an ad­ver­tis­ing agency, graphic de­sign firm, cor­po­rate de­sign of­fice, pub­li­ca­tions art de­part­ment, pho­tog­ra­phy or il­lus­tra­tion stu­dio, TV or mul­ti­me­dia pro­duc­tion com­pany. Stu­dents will be re­quired to keep a learn­ing jour­nal of their in­tern­ship in the form of a blog using Open­lab. A por­tion of the class will be de­voted to pre­sent­ing and shar­ing ex­pe­ri­ences with class­mates. Stu­dents will learn how to as­sess their tal­ents, up­date their re­sume, and pro­mote them­selves and their work through so­cial net­works. Stu­dents will be re­quired to setup and main­tain at least two so­cial media net­works such as: Face­book, LinkedIn, Twit­ter, In­sta­gram, and Pin­ter­est. The in­struc­tors for this class are there as men­tors if you have not yet found an in­tern­ship be­fore reg­is­ter­ing for the course. How­ever, the in­struc­tors do not find an in­tern­ship place­ment for you. It is your re­spon­si­bil­ity to find a po­si­tion that fits your per­sonal ca­reer path and help you tran­si­tion to full time em­ploy­ment upon leav­ing the halls of CityTech. Ide­ally, you will use this site to find an in­tern­ship the se­mes­ter be­fore tak­ing the COMD 4900 class.

This draw­ing course in­tro­duces basic con­cepts, tools, tech­niques and the role of draw­ing in de­sign, il­lus­tra­tion, an­i­ma­tion and games. The course will also cover pro­jec­tion sys­tems, plans, el­e­va­tions, sec­tions, oblique, iso­met­ric, one-point per­spec­tive and two-point per­spec­tive views.

Prin­ci­ples of three-di­men­sional de­sign. Course cov­ers an analy­sis of form and space. Top­ics in­clude: hol­low forms both geo­met­ric and or­ganic; ar­chi­tec­tonic or­ga­ni­za­tion of space; light and shadow; geo­met­ric solids; the mod­u­lar unit; form and struc­ture in na­ture; lin­ear forms with mem­branes; move­ment. Ap­pli­ca­tions to pack­ag­ing, ar­chi­tec­ture, sculp­ture and en­vi­ron­men­tal de­sign and graph­ics. Ma­te­ri­als and in­her­ent prop­er­ties gov­ern­ing their use in form and space.

Web 3 – Fall 2019

This is an in­ten­sive course in de­sign and de­vel­op­ment of dy­namic web­sites. The course of­fers a com­bi­na­tion of the­o­ret­i­cal and prac­ti­cal in­for­ma­tion on how to com­bine the PHP script­ing lan­guage with the MySQL data­base to pro­duce dy­namic web con­tent. Stu­dents are ex­pected to have in­ter­me­di­ate to ex­pert skills in HTML and CSS. The goal of the course is to give stu­dents the ex­pe­ri­ence of de­sign­ing dy­namic web con­tent and demon­strate tasks such as gen­er­at­ing im­ages dy­nam­i­cally, send­ing and man­ag­ing email, fa­cil­i­tat­ing user dis­cus­sions and man­ag­ing con­tent. The pur­pose is to learn a pro­fes­sional ap­proach to web­site con­cep­tu­al­iza­tion and ex­e­cu­tion.

Fac­ulty Com­mons In­tern­ship Jour­nal

Fac­ulty Com­mons, A Cen­ter for Teach­ing, Learn­ing, Schol­ar­ship and Ser­vice co­or­di­nates all pro­fes­sional de­vel­op­ment, grants and as­sess­ment ac­tiv­i­ties of fac­ulty at New York City Col­lege of Tech­nol­ogy. Fac­ulty Com­mons adopts a pro­gram­matic ap­proach to pro­fes­sional de­vel­op­ment and op­er­ates as a fac­ulty re­source and think tank where mem­bers col­lab­o­rate on a va­ri­ety of pro­jects to shape cur­ricu­lum, ped­a­gogy and as­sess­ment. In ac­cor­dance with the Col­lege goals and strate­gic plan and with sup­port from CUNY, the Of­fice of the Provost, the Col­lege Coun­cil and the Pro­fes­sional De­vel­op­ment Ad­vi­sory Coun­cil, Fac­ulty Com­mons will strive to im­prove and pro­mote the qual­ity and ex­cel­lence of fac­ulty at New York City Col­lege of Tech­nol­ogy.
