English 3771, Advanced Career Writing, will provide you with the opportunity to improve your ability to write business documents through applied study and critique from the professor and your peers. You will develop the knowledge, skills, and processes necessary to develop common documents under constraints typically found in the workplace. You will research, plan, organize, write, revise, and present documents and oral communications. In this course, document content and format are stressed, along with audience analysis, problem-solving, and an awareness of ethical issues and the global impact of business communications. The types of documents that you will compose include, but are not limited to, business letters, memos, and short reports for various purposes, and a more lengthy collaborative research report.

English 1101, Sec. 5356: Writing Matters

This course is designed to develop your reading, writing, critical thinking, and basic research skills. Together we will read, analyze and discuss a range of prose texts that will serve as a basis for your own written work. Expressing ideas effectively in writing takes practice, so be prepared to write often in class, share your work with classmates, and engage in editing, drafting, and revising exercises. This is not a lecture course! We will use a workshop model. In fairness to the whole class, each class member must therefore do all assignments and be prepared to participate actively in class activities. As per CUNY guidelines, you should expect to spend a minimum of 6 study/preparation hours each week outside of class time. We meet T/F 11:15 – 12:45 in Namm 604. Image credit: burtonwwod & holmes.
