COMD4900_D298 In­tern­ship SPR2016 Goetz

As­sign­ment to find field­work/study sit­u­a­tions of ap­prox­i­mately eight hours per week at an in­tern­ship site ap­proved by the De­part­ment In­tern­ship in­struc­tor such as an ad­ver­tis­ing agency, graphic de­sign firm, cor­po­rate de­sign of­fice, pub­li­ca­tions art de­part­ment, pho­tog­ra­phy or il­lus­tra­tion stu­dio, TV or mul­ti­me­dia pro­duc­tion com­pany. Stu­dents will be re­quired to keep a learn­ing jour­nal of their in­tern­ship in the form of a blog using Open­lab. A por­tion of the class will be de­voted to pre­sent­ing and shar­ing ex­pe­ri­ences with class­mates. Stu­dents will learn how to as­sess their tal­ents, up­date their re­sume, and pro­mote them­selves and their work through so­cial net­works. Stu­dents will be re­quired to setup and main­tain at least two so­cial media net­works such as: Face­book, LinkedIn, Twit­ter, In­sta­gram, and Pin­ter­est.

Work­ing in­di­vid­u­ally or in teams, stu­dents con­sult with a va­ri­ety of clients on the de­sign and pro­duc­tion of a range of print and dig­i­tal media in­clud­ing logos, posters, web sites, ad­ver­tis­ing cam­paigns, brochures and other pro­mo­tional ma­te­ri­als. Stu­dents are re­spon­si­ble for col­lect­ing re­search, con­duct­ing meet­ings, mak­ing pre­sen­ta­tions and fol­low­ing client guide­lines. The role of dead­lines and bud­gets is stressed. Stu­dents are ex­pected to be in­volved in all phases of pro­duc­tion.

A re­quired course for all Ad­ver­tis­ing De­sign and Graphic Arts stu­dents. Top­ics in­clude cre­ative user in­ter­face de­sign and best work­flow prac­tice. Stu­dents will de­sign a web­site using an (X)HTML tem­plate, and will de­velop de­sign, ty­pog­ra­phy and web pro­gram­ming skills. (X)HTML and CSS will be taught.

ENG 3771 Stu­dent Port­fo­lios – Cor­bett – S14

Eng­lish 3771, Ad­vanced Ca­reer Writ­ing, will pro­vide you with the op­por­tu­nity to im­prove your abil­ity to write busi­ness doc­u­ments through ap­plied study and cri­tique from the pro­fes­sor and your peers. You will de­velop the knowl­edge, skills, and processes nec­es­sary to de­velop com­mon doc­u­ments under con­straints typ­i­cally found in the work­place. You will re­search, plan, or­ga­nize, write, re­vise, and pre­sent doc­u­ments and oral com­mu­ni­ca­tions. In this course, doc­u­ment con­tent and for­mat are stressed, along with au­di­ence analy­sis, prob­lem-solv­ing, and an aware­ness of eth­i­cal is­sues and the global im­pact of busi­ness com­mu­ni­ca­tions. The types of doc­u­ments that you will com­pose in­clude, but are not lim­ited to, busi­ness let­ters, memos, and short re­ports for var­i­ous pur­poses, and a more lengthy col­lab­o­ra­tive re­search re­port.

Dig­i­tal Pho­tog­ra­phy

This course will ex­plore the foun­da­tional con­cepts of light and ex­po­sure in pho­tog­ra­phy. The stu­dent will de­velop fram­ing and com­po­si­tional skills as well as an un­der­stand­ing of pho­tog­ra­phy as rep­re­sen­ta­tion. Stu­dents will be­come ac­quainted with a wide range of con­tem­po­rary pho­tog­ra­phers and gain an un­der­stand­ing of how pho­to­graphic style trans­forms sub­ject mat­ter into mean­ing. Using pro­fes­sional light­ing equip­ment, cam­eras and soft­ware, the stu­dent will gain hands-on ex­pe­ri­ence cap­tur­ing, pro­cess­ing, and print­ing dig­i­tal im­ages in the stu­dio as well as in the field.
