COMD3505 Special Topics in GD, Fall 2023
This skills course offers rotating topics in the graphic design field. Topics may include signage and way-finding systems, exhibition design, lettering, experimental typography, and others. Students can take this course more than once (and up to 2 times) with a different topic. 2 hr. lecture, 2 lab hrs, 3 cr Prerequisites COMD 2400 or department permission FALL 23 Topic: Experimental Typography and Lettering
The emphasis in this intermediate photography class is on creative problem solving with photography for the Communication Design field. Students learn to transform subject matter with photographic style in order to communicate ideas.
COMD3313, Illustration1, FA2022
This course is a practical introduction to the field of illustration. Focus will be placed on process work and professional practices, presented within contemporary and historical context. Course includes projects and lectures in a variety of illustration genres including: advertising, book illustration, film, and editorial. A variety of materials will be introduced through lectures and demonstrations for use on assignments such as: pencil, pen and ink, brush, and digital illustration. Critical concepts such as: Conceptual Development, Working on Assignment, Composition, Contrast, Value, Point of View, and Color theory will be introduced.
This beginning photography course explores the foundational concepts of light and exposure. Using dSLR cameras, professional lighting equipment and software*, the student develops compositional skills and the ability to control photographic style to create visually engaging photographs. *if this course is being held online due to an emergency, students will meet learning outcomes using alternate tools and equipment.
Graphic Design Principles COMD 1100 OLO4
This foundation design and color theory course explores graphic communication from idea development to final execution. Through hands-on experiments, collaborative learning, and individual projects students will learn the language and process of design thinking and gain a solid foundation in design principles and practices. While studying the basic tenets of design students develop visual literacy by following a design process: 1. Research 2. Experimentation 3. Development of Skill, Craft and Voice 4. Expression of Form, Emotions or Concepts 5. Thoughtful Assessment (verbal and written) 6. Record of significant commitment of time Communication designers use the concepts explored in this course in disciplines such as advertising, graphic design, web design, illustration, broadcast design, photography, and game design.
