Remote Sensing

Highlights the physical and mathematical principles underlying remote sensing techniques, covering the radiative transfer equation,atmospheric sounding techniques, interferometric and lidar systems, and an introduction to image processing. The lab component introduces remote sensing software HYDRA, and MATLAB, used for image display and data analysis.

AFR 3000: Black New York

AFR 3000: Black New York

Using history, literature, the arts, politics, and sociology, this interdisciplinary course seeks to trace the Africana presence in New York from the 1600s to the present. This localized course will enable students to examine the varied ways in which people of African descent in the Diaspora have helped to shape the complex identity of New York City over time. Readings, films, music, information literacy sources, and local cultural and research institutions will be used to examine topics, such as slavery, resistance, migration, immigration, labor, Civil Rights, popular culture, gender politics, and gentrification.

Topics for the course include sample spaces and probabilities, discrete distributions (Binomial, Negative Binomial, Geometric, Hypergeometric, Poisson, and Gamma), continuous distributions (Uniform, Normal, Chi-squared), expectation and variance, hypothesis testing, interval estimation and confidence intervals. There will be extensive use of MS Excel and R, a statistical software program. At the end of the course, students should be able make meaningful connections between statistics and other areas of study, including and social sciences.

Statistics with Probability

A 3 credit but 4 hour introductory course. Topics include sample space, expectation and variance, binomial, Poisson, normal, student and chi-square distributions, confidence interval, hypothesis testing, correlation and regression. Students do 3 projects, 1 individual and 2 in groups and choose one of the group projects to present at the end of the semester. The extra classroom hour is designed to facilitate a hands-on feel to the course including a heavy use of MS Excel. CUNY Service Corps

The CUNY Service Corps will mobilize CUNY students, faculty and staff to work on projects that improve the short and long-term civic, economic and environmental sustainability of New York City and of its residents and communities. The program’s goals are three-fold: for students to make a meaningful difference through service while gaining valuable real-world work experience, earning a wage, and where appropriate, receiving college credit; for faculty members and staff, through their work with students in the program, to have additional opportunities to apply their expertise to addressing many of the city’s key challenges; and for residents, communities, and project sponsors to realize concrete benefits as a result of CUNY Service Corps projects.
