Webinar Name: From Graphic Designer to UX/UI
Speaker: Elizabeth Alli – Senior Product Designer
I learned that there’s some people who are Graphic Designers are going into the UX/UI field. True, I did have the option to do UX/UI as I’m being taught and have been though of Graphic Design but I don’t really see myself as a Graphic Designer due to the disinterest I have in it even if I’m taught things about it. I also didn’t know that apparently some UX/UI Designers usethe same two fonts and the same five colors. Usually, something I say to who I work with is, “If I don’t hiss at it, then it’s likely good enough.” because if I, someone who’s not so passionate about Graphic Design startΒ complainingΒ about how bad it is, I see that as a really bad sign of how bad it is. That and it sounds kind of like something I’ve messed with and seen on a website. I know a UI is done in video games, as it’s often the menu to select things and/or to see what you have in the game, give or take.
Not surprised to hear that companies want to hear someone who has years of experience with one specialty or a small handful, not being a Swiss Army Knife, a Jack of All Trades, Master of None. It is also ironic due to the boom in needing to teach students to not be a One Trick Pony.
They mention how rather than telling them about your skills, you gotta bring up what you do in their language, ala, sooner mention what they’re looking for. Modify your sales pitch in line with what they’re looking for.
They’re looking for Character Designer? Mention the projects and/or designs you’ve done relating to the topic, how much you’ll research, put in the effort, etc to get the job done.
(I feel I sooner know how to do this on the creative scale, on the the mundane resume scale, not so much.)
I learned a few things about UX/UI; makes me want to take a class on it as it reminds me that the interest was there and I could’ve this semester but I ended up basically doing a coin flip of sorts and took Web Design & Analytics. Mostly due to it being something I may sooner use due to being a Communication Designer and I’ll likely make my own site again in the future. I tend to enjoy things with coding I’ve noticed, but I’ve mostly done web design related things.
My review of the webinar event was that it’s useful for those trying to do UX/UI related jobs and those thinking of doing a change in their Communication Design careers.
