Monday we meet in the classroom.
We are working toward the November 13 due date for the COMPLETE RAB.
As I circulated around the computer lab yesterday, the good news is — I see improvement!Ā Most of you are understanding how to write the Source Entry.
A few pointers about Summary Writing:
- Study the STRUCTURE of the article. It has parts.Ā Get a MI from each major part of the article.
- Make sure you get enough of the main points into your summaries so I know what the article is about.
- When I read your summary, I should know what the article is about.Ā Ā I should NOT have to read the article myself!Ā SO ā If you have written a good summary, there will be NO need to for me to read the article.
- HINT ā If an article hasĀ subheadings, then those subheadings denote a part in this structure.Ā Use the subheads to find one main point in each part.Ā Then gather those points together to become your summary.
- USE theĀ titleĀ of the source article. The words in the title are a clue to the MI of the article.Ā If the title is āFour Ways to Happiness,ā then your summary should include a MI explaining the Four Ways.Ā If the title is āThe Secret to Success: Hope Molecules,ā then your summary should explain what Hope Molecules are and how that contributes to success.Ā Itās a MI!
- Discuss the article with a friend, so you practice saying out loud what the MIs are.
A few pointers about Rhetorical Analysis:
- Stick to the guiding questions from the Assignment and get straight to the point. Donāt have lengthy repeats of the MIs ā those belong in the Summary!
HW 6 Due Saturday November 2.Ā
Post your Source Entry 2 (opinion piece) to the Open Lab (not Google Drive).Ā You will copy and paste from your RAB that you are ābuildingā on your own computer.Ā I will not be commenting this time.Ā I will just check to see that you are following the Writing Process and getting the steps done on time.Ā Ā
- Title: RAB Source Entry 2 ā Your Name
- Category: RAB Source Entry 2
- Bring TWO hard copies to class on Monday.
ALSO this weekend you are finding and choosing your third source.Ā LOOK AT THE ASSIGNMENT!Ā This will be a non-print source.Ā THINK -- TEDtalk, podcast, interview, documentary or news video clip or university website video) or creative source (art, photography) On Monday -- I will ask students to SHOW the class their third source on the projector and we will discuss how to write a Source Entry for this non-print source.
I am commenting on your Source Entry 1 (HW 5) which you should have uploaded last week on Google Drive.
HW 5 — For the LATE people, remember no comments and no credit are given for late work.Ā However, for this time, I will do my best to comment on the LATE submitted Source Entry 1.Ā If you donāt see comment, send me an email to remind me.Ā I am not able to notice when you submit late work because I have already read through and graded. Ā I did this right after the due date last Saturday. Ā It is very difficult to go backwards in my grading process and locate LATE submissions.Ā I will do it this time to help you get a good start on writing the first Source Entry.Ā
Finally -- last day to withdraw is Wednesday November 6.
