Saved – Marc Mentor

My story is about how one person changed my life for the better. I had just transferred to a new school and had few friends from the start. To this day, not one of them has had as much of an impact on my life as Shay did. I was a skinny kid, short by most standards at 5’0, and both outspoken and introverted at the same time. So, it was a massive surprise on the first day of school when I was going through the regular motions of going from class to class, listening to the teachers for a few minutes, then, as always, getting bored and falling asleep. I was pretty uninterested in school as a whole until one math class that changed my life.

I had already fallen asleep when Shay, who was late to class, tapped on my shoulder to introduce herself, I looked up to see her she was in our schools standard uniform for our grade turquoise Polo shirt, Black pants, black shoes her hair was long and straight and went down the length of her torso, she was wearing a pink mask but I still saw the outline of her cheeks and knew she was smiling at me but I was nervous so I said only one word, “Hi,” then immediately fell back asleep. She tapped me again and introduced herself properly, telling me her name. I didn’t want to be rude, so I straightened my posture and sat up to tell her my name. Ironically, I never used her real name again after that day because we became friends, and I gave her a nickname that she still loves to hear to this day “Shay”. We became friends, and she tried to talk to me as often as possible. I tried to talk to her as often as possible, too. Every day, I looked forward to actually going to math class because of her. Because of her, I liked math now.
