For our proposal we wanted use different sources to get a broad base of information. We each choose an aspect of our video to represent and a different medium to research. We all did our own investigations and compiled them for our presentation. The following are a description of how we each accomplished our portion of the project and the research behind our choice of presentation software.
We first went on Google.com and searched what not to do in college. There were a lot of sources we found, we searched things not to do in college/ blog post. We found so much information about things to do in college, but not enough on things not to do. After searching about 4 pages full of links, we came across a post “7 Things Not to Do in College”. We found this post very useful toward our project. Once we found that blog post, we kept on searching for more blog posts and we found a second blog to use, the name of the blog post is “5 Things NOT to Do Before Graduating College”. The first blog explained more about some of the tips mentioned and the second blog post was brief in format, but included some useful tips.
After searching blog posts we then did a basic yahoo search with the term newspaper articles and tips to survive college. They were very generalalized search terms and they led us to irrelevant results that were not from a newspaper source, which this aspect of the research had to come from newspaper. Our first source here was an online and a physical news publication that was established in 1835. We decided to use the article “A College Survival”. As we read the article we immediately found it useful. The second source we decided to use was a community college newspaper called “The CNM Chronicle,” the article was in a form of a guide, but we only intend to use it as a sample for our guide and expand upon it by using it as a reference when making our video format.
We also used the college website which has a link to the learning atrium and student wellness center on campus. We went to the wellness center to see what they offered the students. There we found a wall of pamphlets with information for healthy eating habits, excercise, disease prevention and control. In some of these pamphlets the CDC is mentioned, so we decided to use their site as part of our information commentary. This portion would be added to the video after the students interviews.
We viewed Powerpoint, Google Docs and Prezi for our options in presentation software. We opted to go with Prezi having liked the themes of their presentation software better. The theme we have selected is a visual representation of footsteps on a path, like that of a person on a journey. We felt that this theme depicted what college essentially is, a journey. We believed it would be a good visual aid when descibing how we intended to produce our video.
