Team Vocabulary – Weekly

 

The weekly chronological Team Vocabulary goes here!

Each week each member of the team must contribute at least 3 vocabulary words and definitions written in your own words to the teams listing. These lists should be kept organized in a chronological fashion. List the Term- it’s definition – credit the author and include the date it was added.

NODE: A point at which lines come together.

ASSET: Something useful.

ITERATION: Repetition of something

Iterations – It’s a process of repeating a set of instructions in different way a number of times or until a specific result is achieved.

Verbose – Using more words when not necessary.

Liability – where wiring meet together.

Asset – something that is useful to someone.

Node – an intersecting point for lines.

Orientation – the position of something or someone.

Atrium – open roof hall or a central area.

Offset – to counter act, by having some effect or force.

Facade – the front of a building.

Dimension – measure of something length, width, & height.

LEGEND: list of words or simbols with definitions.

CEILING PLANS: it helps to understand what is in the building ceiling by looking at it  as a floor plan.

GRID: system of lines that help identify certain points.

Racking– movement in a square connection

Family– categories of items

Integral – necessary to make something complete.

Airspace – space availible in a house that allow air flow.

Pile Cap – thick concrete rest on piles and is part of the foundation of a building.

Retrofitting– The process of adding something to an already existing structure in order to prevent it from failure.

Redesign– To make a revision in the appearance or function of.

Case Study– The intensive analysis of an individual unit.

Hydrology–  The study of the movement, distribution, and quality of water on Earth and other planets.

Acoustics– The interdisciplinary science that deals with the study of all mechanical waves in gases, liquids, and solids including vibration, sound and ultrasound.

Topography– The study of earth’s surface.

Vegetation– The plant life of a region.

Zoning– The land use planning used by local governments.

NOMINAL : relating to

SOLDIER: a brick laid vertically with the narrow

MODULAR:  Employing or involving a module or modules in design or construction.

parapet: A low wall on the roof to prevent falls.

axonometric view: when an object is rotated to 45o.

isometric view: when an object is rotated  to 30o.

oblique drawing: a 3D dimentional drawing of an object that shows one side of  its true  shape, and the rest in destorted angles.

shutter: a movable panel used to cover an opening.

masonry wall: exterior construction made from brick.

Flat Roof: a flat roof is horizontal or nearly horizontal.

Pitched Roof: is a roof for which one or more roof surfaces is pitched more than 10 degrees.

Overhang: is a protruding structure which may provide protection for lower level.

Extrusion: is a process used to create objects of a fixed cross sectional profile.

Call out – a section of a building, a bit more of a view than a section though.

Keystone – vault or arch and marks its apex, locking the other pieces into position.

Bahut – a small parapet or attic wall bearing the weight of the roof.

Bond – brickwork with overlapping bricks. Types of bond include stretcher, English, header, Flemish, garden wall, herringbone, basket,  & American.

Coping – the capping or covering of a wall.

Dormer – A window projecting out from a sloping roof or the entire roofed structure containing the window.

Addiemdum- modification on a project drawing

Add Alternate- raises the price on a job if there is a certain modification made on the project drawing

Deduct Alternate- lowers the price on a job for the modification being made on the project drawing.

Galloping Gertie – The 1940 Tacoma Narrows Bridge was the first incarnation of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, a suspension bridge in the U.S.

Duplicate – a copy of one or more identical things.

Category – a set of something which maybe distributed/branched off differently/separately.

Elevationa drawing to scale of the external face of a building or structure

Orthomodean AutoCad command that keeps lines straight on the drawing

Detail Drawing- a separate large-scale drawing of a small part or section of a building, machine, etc.

Recess- a space, such as a niche or alcove, set back or indented

Expansion Jointa gap in steel or concrete to allow for thermal expansion

Designto work out the structure or form of (something), as by making a sketch, outline, pattern, or plans

Precast Panelbeing concrete that is cast in the form of a structural element (as a panel or beam) before being placed in final position

RevealThe part of the side of a window or door opening that is between the outer surface of a wall and the window or door frame.

Window Scheduleall necessary items needed to put the window together

Divide(Command) Places points along a line, polyline, arc, or circle, dividing it into the specified number of equal parts

Mortar Jointspaces between bricks, concrete blocks, or glass blocks, that are filled with mortar or grout

Array(Command)Makes multiple copies of selected objects in a rectangular (parallel with the snap rotation) or circular pattern

Egress A path or opening for going out; an exit.

Monochrome everything is black and white

Viewport(Command) Divides the AutoCAD graphics display into multiple viewports, each of which can contain a different view of the current drawing

Plotter a computer printing device for printing vector graphics.

Section a representation of a portion of a building or object exposed when cut by an imaginary vertical plane so as to show its construction and interior

OSNAP(Command) Enables points to be precisely located on reference points of existing objects.

Bit Map – represents an item, example an image, it would store more lines with dimensions. (Ex. 75×75)

Vector – line/direction.

Buttress – is a support built against a wall to support or reinforce it.

CAD – stands for computer-aided design. Architects, drafters, engineers, and artists use CAD software to create plans and construction drawings.

Corbel – is an architectural bracket or block projecting from a wall and supporting (or appearing to support) a ceiling, beam, or shelf. (Usually made from wood, plaster, or plastic material).

Parapet – is a low wall projecting from the edge of a platform, terrace, or roof.

Truss – A framework, typically consisting of rafters, posts, and struts, supporting a roof, bridge, or other structure.

Stairs – A set of steps leading from one floor of a building to another, typically inside the building.

Pre-fab – is an abbreviation for prefabricated. The word prefab is to describe any type of construction, that is made easy-to-assemble building parts that were manufactured off-site.

Fire Rating: the duration for which a passive fire protection system can withstand a standard fire resistance test.

Fumhood: Place for mixing chemicals.
