Create: Hyena-Swine Monologue

“Every time the man with the whip prepares for his meal, something smell especially good. A lot better than what I found to eat in the woods. And when I saw Leopard man hunt for the rabbit, I  want in on that. But the master knows everything, and that is why they cornered Leopard man. And now the master is dead, that 5-fingers man is no master, he bleed and feel pain just like the rest of us. I will hunt on all four for flesh, this some how come very naturally to me. Sucking up water in all four is so satisfying, I didn’t feel bad for the dog man I ate. In fact I bet the 5-fingers man taste just as good too, and I will chase after him. ”

This is the monologue of the Hyena-swine, he has retrogress to his beast form and finds it much fulfilling. My guiding question was what does the animal represent? The dog man has loyal just like the characteristic, he has to find a master to obey to, and he die fulfilling his master’s wish. It is a tragic but the Dog-man probably feels he fulfilled his purpose. The Dog-Man represent loyalty.

“The two most formidable Animal Men were my Leopard-man and a creature made of Hyena and swine.”

The Hyena-swine are two animals who eat meat naturally, and the way Moreau force them to obey the law to not eat flesh is unnatural to him. I would say the Leopard man and Hyena-swine represent revolt, he was being oppressed under Dr. Moreau’s law and when he saw Leopard-man broke the law, a part of Hyena-swine beast habitat tells him to do so too. But he was afraid of the House of Pain, but he sees that the master fears them too and the master bleed just like them. Hyena-swine knows he no longer have to be obeys the law, he no longer have to oppress his thirst for living his natural form.

Clue for A Good Man Is Hard To Find

While I was reading A Good Man Is Hard To Find the question that come to my mind was why the grandmother does not have a name? The little girl June Star has a name, but the mother and the grandmother does not have a name. T

he grandmother plays a big rule in this story, she is the one who want the kids to see this house and she is the one who scared the cat when she realized she has directed Bailey to go the wrong way and causes the accident and got the whole family killed by the Misfit, but she does not have a name. O’Connor purposely not giving this major character a name because he believe a hypocrite and racist character like grandmother is common. It will be more significant to leave her unnamed and focus on the way this character would speak and dress.

The grandmother have the most dialogues in the story. O’Connor make sure the grandmother to express all her opinion to show the kind of shallow and mean person she is. “Little n___s in the country don’t have things like we do. If I could paint, I’d paint that picture.” the grandmother said when they pass by the shack with an African American child standing by it. She is surprise and pointing at the child like he is an animal at the zoo and using offensive word to describe him.

Before the family leave for their trip, O’Connor describe the grandmother’s attired very throughly ,”the grandmother had a navy blue straw sailor hat with a bunch of white violets on the brim and a navy blue dress with a small white dot in the print…in case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once that she was a lady.” This is a very strange metaphor to use for describing someone who is dress very nice and this line also foreshadow what is coming for the grandmother. She is a very vivid character, but with no name, O’Connor wants his reader to have a clear picture in their mind of this character, her characteristic is more important, the title of the person is not important.

Connect from “Everyday Use”-Alice Walker

In “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker when Dee was arguing with her mother about who get to have the quilt made by Grandma Dee, Maggie offers for Dee to have them, “like somebody used to never winning anything, or having anything reserved for her” (page 6). Walker only describe  Maggie’s tone when she said “She (Dee) can have them,” but I can imagine Maggie probably have her head droop down looking at her feet, maybe even playing with her fingers to distract herself from the sadness of never able to own something she wants.

Growing up with a sister, there were many moments in my life where my sister and I fight over toys, clothes and other little stuffs. Unlike Maggie, when my sister said to my mother “She can have them” she said it to gain sympathy from my mother so it will result in her winning over the object we were fighting for or my mother would get her something nicer then the one I have.

I remember 2007 Black Friday, I was in seventh grade and my sister was in fourth grade, and it was not usually for a teenager to own a personal laptop during that time period. My mother thought it would be a good chance to get my sister and I a new MP3 player, but I can also get a personal laptop for school purposes. I was really excited about that news, but my sister was not. She wined to my mother about how I can always get new and advance stuff because I am the oldest and she only get the old stuff pass down by me. I tried to be rational and asked why does a fourth grader need a personal laptop for? So my sister gets all droopy and teary and said “She can have them” I guess my mother thought it was unfair that my sister doesn’t always have the chance to get new things. So in result, my sister end up getting a new MP3 player and a laptop and I only have a MP3 player. I seriously thought I was adopted.
