The Unforgettable Past

Since the beginning of the story, I had always had the question of how Okonkwo’s past would affect his future? A man who grew up without a role model and who lived in constant fear of being compared to his father. Also that the fact that he is a man who can’t express any emotion except that of anger. This leads me to think of Okonkwo as a character who would not want to resolve things peacefully, if it was up to him, as well as a man who doesn’t wish to be look down upon by anyone. For example even when it came to the death of Ikemefuna he did not hesitate to kill his “son” who had influenced his family and had already became part of them. He did this even though Ikemefuna pleaded “My father, they have killed me!” due to the fear of being thought of as weak by his people. Looking towards the future this type of characteristic may cause him more problems than there should have originally been.

My snap shot is 146 to the middle of pg.147, “There was nothing for it but courage….. found half a dozen cartridges in his pocket”.

My guiding question was how will Prendick relationship with the beast men change and how will it affect him. This snapshot shows a clue at how Prendick treats these beast people and how he looks at them. It also provides a clue onto how Wells decides to convey the novel through the style of the text. It’s easy to note that Prendick has been having strange thoughts and inferring many things from the beast people but in this snapshot it showed more of his true thoughts and rationalization on how he really saw them. “There was nothing for it but courage”. Even though it doesn’t show any real evidence on how he felt towards them, it was generally just saying that even through his fear he had to do what he had to do to survive and the best way to accomplish that would be to use these beast people and show no signs of doubt. The style also gives us a hint in how the Prendick feels towards the beast men especially since he says “None escape”. Prendick hasn’t recited the prayer with the beast people since the he came back to the enclosure showing not only does he want to keep this Law in place to keep himself safe, he also wants to control these beast people for as long as possible to escape the island and leave these horrors behind.

The question that hit the moment, I began to read the story was what effects does the Misfit have on the family? From the moment the Misfit was mentioned and the fact that Bailey payed no mind to the grandmother talking about him, really got me thinking what role will the Misfit play in the story.

“A good man is hard to find,” Red Sammy said. “Everything is getting terrible. I remember the day you could go off and leave your screen door unlatched. Not no more” was a statement by the owner who was having a conversation with the grandmother about the Misfit who had just escaped from prison, gives a clue of what kind of influence the Misfit is going to have on this family. A family who seems to always go vacation to Florida coming to face with a man who had just escaped prison and was heading the same way. This man just buy hearing his name could be no good of a man just like the owner states. He would have to be one of the reason why in those days you would not leave your screen door unlocked anymore. Even in the mist of an accident where one would believe that someone would be helpful and kind to the person or people in trouble but what the family got was not what they expected. They had the worst of luck to face criminals who were not good men and help the family out of the accident. Showing that a good man really is hard to find.

I found “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker to be a compelling short story about a mother getting a visit from her most well-achieved child. Although what I found most compelling of the story were the elements implemented into the story such as Point of View, the setting, the establish of the characters and much more. The most appealing of the elements that mainly intrigued me was the element of the Point of View. The one element that left me in bewildered was the Theme. This story takes place in first person Point of View, we use I just as the narrator, or the mother, in “Everyday Use” uses I to depict herself. “I will wait for her in the yard that Maggie and I made so clean and wavy yesterday afternoon”. The reason I find this element to be the most appealing is the aspects of this element. Point of View allows us the reader to see and take in the emotions and the thought process of the mother who is being visited by her daughter. “But even the first glimpse of leg out of the car tells me it is Dee. Her feet were always neat looking, as if God himself had shaped them with a certain style”. This quotes goes to show the very idea of how much a mother pays attention to her kids and the her thoughts of her own daughter.  On the other hand, I found the Theme to be a little difficult to understand. Theme is the meaning of the story, or what is the story trying to convey to the reader. The story has a compelling ending and an emotional peak, the incidents with the quilt, but I don’t quite understand what Alice was trying to convey as the theme of the story ; Justice? I would have thought that the theme was never going back on your words but the story seems to be more oriented towards the traditions and the culture that it seems to be aimed at following ones’ values. “They had been pieced by Grandma Dee and then Big Dee and me had hung them on the quilt frames on the front porch and quilted them “. The quotes shows how much of a tradition and maybe how cultural most of the things in the house were from the quilts to the benches.
