Okonkwo Selfishness Towards His Family

“As Okonkwo sat in his hut that night, gazing into a log fire, he thought over the matter. Sudden fury rose within him and he felt a strong desire to take up his machete, go the church and wipe out the entire vile and miscreant gang. but on further thought he told himself that Nwoye was not worth fighting for. why, he cried in his heart, should he, Okonkwo, of all people, be cursed with such a son?”

From this scene you can see that Okonkwo pride is getting the best of him, we are shown even more how Okonkwo doesn’t care about his family  he only care about himself and his self-image. Okonkwo care about using the land he was given by his uncle in his motherland to try to prove that he will never give but he doesn’t worry about this own family feeling about be exile all he care about is when the seven years will end and he can go home to gain back his respect from his fatherland. Okonkwo hate the fact the these white man come to his country and try to destroy his faith to his gods. For Nwoye making one mistake by talking to one of the priest, Okonkwo go crazy and beat his son and almost try to kill him if wasn’t for his uncle to stop Okonkwo from doing that to his son, Nwoye would’ve die if he didn’t answer his father and from that Okonkwo disown him and told his son to never  come back. That was not fair for Nwoye because when his father made that mistake by killing his own clan mate, his son never said anything or hated his father for having to leave his home and friends for seven years. He just went with his family and never argue about it but Okonkwo doesn’t care about his son he wouldn’t even understand what his son was doing or try to convince him to not do what Nwoye was going to do because Okonkwo only cares about his self, he doesn’t want to know why Nwoye was doing this but why he was cursed with such a son.

The Fear of the Unknown of the Island of Dr. Moruea and At the Mountain of Madness

In both stories the narrator had a sense of fear of the places their were at, in chapter 9 of the   island of Dr. Moruea when Prendick left the enclosure to wonder the island everything went wrong when he saw the die rabbit and then saw the beast monster. After that was when he was fearing for his life and try to get back to the enclosure but he kept getting lost. when he got to the forest he started seeing things in the forest like beast people chanting a ritual. It didn’t look the same when it got darker he ended up seeing shadow like fingers and more. Then he was getting chase by one of the beast people and his imagination was going wild he didn’t know what going to happen to him when he finally got back to the enclosure he did not know what he had saw  was real or not and when he ask Montgomery he did not tell Prendick anything about the monster. It was the same way with at the mountain of madness on page 103 when the men couldn’t get in contact with Lake they left there camp to find out what had happened as the there were heading to the camp the narrator stated that he started to see mirages of thing. Their imagination was going wild as it got darker the more they were heading closer to the camp the more the mirages grew. once they got to the camp they saw all the men dead and the dogs too and also the sleds gone. The didn’t know what to say and they keep all the crazy details to themselves and didn’t tell the Arkham. Also Danforth saw something but didn’t tell anyone because he didn’t know what he saw was real or not. So you can see the connection of both stories because the narrator were try to enjoy themselves at the place of the unknown, Prendick was try to not be afraid of the island and accepted it because he found the island to be beautiful and amazing something he never seen before but when he saw those things that I previously stated he was afraid of being on the island and wanted to leave. At mountain of madness the men were so proud and happy of there great discovery in the Arctic but once they saw what happened and they couldn’t find out how they this happened  to their men they just wanted to get out.

The Connect Snapshot of Rip Van Winkle and The Dead

The two snapshot that I have chosen from both stories of Rip Van Winkle and The Dead are the problems between Rip and his wife, and the argument  with Gabriel and Miss. Ivors. The snapshot of Rip Van Winkle is at the beginning of page six when the author states ” Rip Van Winkle, however was one of those happy mortals, of foolish, well-oiled dispositions, who take the world easy, eat white bread or brown, whichever can be got with least thought or trouble, and would rather starve on a penny than work for a pound. if left to himself, he would have whistled life, in perfect contentment; but his wife kept continually dinning his ears about his idleness, his carelessness and the ruin he was bringing on the family.” The snapshot of The Dead is at end of page 62  with the conversation of Gabriel and Miss. Ivors starts off  ” O innocent Amy! I have found out that you write for The Daily Express. Now aren’t you ashamed of yourself? Why should I be ashamed of myself? Well I’m ashamed of you, To say you’d write for a paper like that. I didn’t think you were a West Briton. It was true that he wrote a literary column every Wednesday in The Daily Express, for which he was paid fifteen shillings. But that did not make him a West Briton.” In both of these snapshot it show how both Rip and Gabriel are being treated unfairly of the things that love to do by these two ladies. Rip love to be free, love to do what ever he want and love to help people. In his wife eyes she think of him being careless and lazy of the of the work that he has to do at home which is the farm but Rip know that the farm is useless and that their no point working on it. She also think that he doesn’t care about his family and wants nothing to do with them but Rip care for his children but hates his wife. Gabriel, he love to write his literary column every Wednesday, that was his way of show his love for literature but Miss. Ivors just makes funny of him and called a West Briton( is a derogatory term for an Irish person who is perceived as being too anglophilic in matters of culture or politics) in front of everyone at the party and then try to say that she was joking but we all know that she meant it. Gabriel being a nice person that he is doesn’t say anything that would offend her because they are friends but deep down he said “literature was above politics.” So those are the two close comparison that I have chosen for these stories.

The Pathway of Evil “Young Goodman Brown

In the story Young Goodman Brown, Hawthorne mentions the word evil at the end of the story where Goodman is at the ceremony. The devil is welcoming his new followers which Goodman and Faith, the way Hawthorne uses the word evil to create suspense is at the part when the devil said ” Evil is the nature of mankind. Evil must be your only happiness. Welcome, again my children, to the communion of your race!” Also when Goodman said “Herein did the Shape of Evil dip his hand and prepare to lay the mark of baptism upon their forehead, that they might be partakers of the mystery of sin. I believe Hawthorne want to show the readers that evil is everywhere and the people you think are good in the outside are actually bad people in the inside. In the beginning of the story Goodman calls the person he travels with” friend” which I believe was the devil because the way he explains the staff that he caring and then the traveler knew his grandfather and father. The traveler said that he helped them both and they were his good friends. After that there was the minister and Deacon Gookin which are supposed to be religious man spreading the word of God but find out that they are walking the same dark pathway as Goodman, show they are follower of the devil. Meanwhile the next person Goodman see is the old Christian lady Goody Cloyse and he finds out that she is a witch and is friend’s with the devil, the more farther Goodman goes thought the dark forest the more evil people he sees that live in his village. The only thing that keeps from falling to darkness was his wife Faith, but once he saw her walking the same pathway everything change, he tried to call her to him but then she vanished into the forest. At that point Goodman gave up on God and his faith. Once Goodman made it the end of the  forest where the ceremony is located, you can see that God tries to save Goodman when it said ” His own dead father beckoned him to advance, looking downward from a smoke-wreath, while a woman with dim feathers of despair, threw out her hand to warn him back.” It was too late Goodman was trapped and he try help his wife and himself to resist mark of the devil but she was ready to be baptized with the mark.

The story that I find that is connected to Young Goodman Brown is the story of Adam and Eve. The similarities of Goodman Brown is Adam and Eve both did not follow the path of goodness, righteous, what god presented it to them and the devil walk them to the wrong path. God told Adam and Eve not to eat of the apple she listen to the devil saying that why god is not giving you this knowledge she was tempted to eat it and disobeyed and they were thrown out of the garden of Eden because not following or listening the right path. Young Goodman Brown follows the same purpose because Gods Warning was told in faiths dream to not go to the journey but to stay with her. Goodman does not listen at all so he get tempted by the devil the further into the forest. Adam one life line was Eve the moment he trusted her and ate the apple he committed sin. Goodman one life line to stay with God was to stay with his wife Faith the moment he saw Faith following the same path as he, he gave up on God and received the mark of the Devil. At the end of both stories Adam and Eve regretted what they both committed and they both got kicked out of the Garden of Eden. Goodman regretted what he did from that episode and he lost faith in everything from that he died alone.
