Public Health Service Learning Project
In 2018 during our Public Health Course, students were divided into different groups and chose a place where to go and present a topic related to dental hygiene. Our topic presented was about Periodontal Disease and Prevention. As a team, we created a power point, activities and a research paper.
The place we chose to go was a restaurant, where the employees lack of dental insurance. We provided patient education about oral hygiene and how to prevent periodontal disease. Also, dental goodies as toothbrushes, toothpastes, floss and Listerine were given away.

Head Start Fluoride Varnish Program
During senior year, we had a great opportunity to provide oral examinations and fluoride varnish at a Head Start Center for Pre-K school children. It was a very nice experience to help children of low income families and educate them about oral health. This community service program gave me the opportunity to explain to parents the importance of maintaining a good oral health for their children. I was able to share my knowledge and provided education about tooth decay and nutrition. Seeing these children smiling made me proud of the dental hygiene environment and all the material learned so far.
Greater New York Smiles Children’s Program
In November 2017, our Dental Hygiene program had a great opportunity to participate during the Greater New York Dental Meeting at the Jacob K. Javis Convention Center. As a team, we were able to see over 500 children from different areas of New York. Oral screenings, tooth brushing techniques and goodie bags were provided to all children. It was an amazing experience to teach children about nutrition, eating habits, tooth decay and fluoride.
