Service Learning Project

St. Mary Gate of Heaven School

We visited 3rd graders attending St. Mary Gate of Heaven School to educate basic oral home care using powerpoints created by our group. We demonstrated toothbrushing & flossing technique using typodons, and have children participate in different activities related to our lessons. In the end, we gave out a goody-bag for children and few instructions for them to bring home and share with their parents.

Through this experience, I learned what is appropriate to demonstrate for children in elementary school. We avoided using difficult words, and tried to make the lesson very interesting by including different activities throughout.

Screening for Early Childhood Caries and Fluoride Application for children in pre-school.

We were divided into groups to visit every classroom in school and educate children with correct brushing technique and oral home care.  Then, we screened children (age around 3-6 year old) for early childhood caries, and for the urgency of care needed. 5% sodium fluoride varnish was applied after quick screening. Children received stickers as a reward for great cooperation.

Through this program, I learned how to give quick screening for children and give fluoride varnish treatment, with limited instruments. It was a great experience for me to work with very young children and learn how to build relationship with the them as a dental hygienist.
