Assignment Guide on Ethical Reasoning 2/2
ENTRY 2
In the second journal entry assignment students will write about whether or not the readings they’ve been assigned have changed their perspective on their own design work.
a) Students are to reflect on whether, in the past, they have used another’s creative work and how have they given that artist credit?
In the past, I have used another’s creative work for practicing in classes.
For example, in advertising classes. Designing ads that it would use a lot of images.
These images may be photographic photos, and the illustrations were from the Internet. Because it was an exercise and it would not be announced. As long as the sources clearly indicated on the line.
For example, in illustration lessons. Images were used as design resources and would be saved and sourced in the folders.
They can be used as a medium of inspiration. The Designing would avoid imitation and plagiarism, and innovation was the main theme.
But some exercises are serious, so I would like to use my own works or free copyrighted images.
b) Students are to give their opinion of the arguments and outcome of the Fairey Copyright case.
Fairey did not have the necessary respect for the artist, and ignore the consequences of using Garcia photos.
Because the work was public and profitable. The poster and the photo were very similar.
He should be aware of those problems. He should investigate the photo and seek the consent of the original artist or owner of the photo. Opinions were unified or a contract was signed.
He did nothing at all, the original artist did not have any credit.
After he was sued, his explanation was that he had found the wrong photographer. He did not have any proof that he tried to contact and give credit to the photographer.
Later, he put forward the theory of transforming works. But he didn’t understand it clearly. His poster and Garcia photos, their performance demands were different.
After studying Shepard Fairey Copyright Case again, I realized that it is risky to transform, redesign the original artist ’s work, or against the idea of the original artist.
Assignment Guide on Ethical Reasoning 1/2
Description of Assignment on General Education assessment.
Students are assigned the following readings: 1. Four Chapters from the AIGA Design and Business Ethics Handbook. 2. readings about the Shepard Fairey Copyright Case: The AP image Used in the “Hope” Poster during the 2008 Presidential Campaign 3. Sample Confidentiality/Non-Disclosure Agreement.
Students are to write 2 journal entries after completing at least 8 weeks of their internship.
ENTRY 1:
The first journal entry will discuss their experience at the internship related to the ethical guidelines discussed in the AIGA guide.
a) They are to discuss how the design work they are doing handles sourcing of images and the company’s trademarks & logos.
I am making animation, it use many image resources. The images are photos, illustrations, logos and slogans. They are provided by the company.
The photos were taken in the studio and the characters were voluntary. Others are designed by the company’s designers. They are all original and there is no problem with ownership.
For example, an animator designs animations for slogans. The image of the slogan has been finalized. The animators cannot change the slogan’s font, spacing, color and so on. The slogan image that is ultimately rendered in the animation must be the same as the original.
b) It will also discuss if they had to sign a confidentiality or non-disclosure agreement for their internship site and how they have handled that with regard to their internship journal for this class.
During the internship, I did not sign a confidentiality agreement.
But whether or not to sign a confidentiality agreement, they should abide by the code of ethics. Do not disclose proprietary and confidential information. If not, It can cause trouble and even legal liability.
For example, according to CNN News CNN News on September 1st, US President Trump’s private secretary Madeleine Westerhout came out at a private dinner to expose the private affairs of the president’s family, even once The reporters at the scene boasted that they were more loved by Trump than their own children. The result was later known to the President himself, and Wester was forced to resign on the 29th.
In order not to disclose proprietary and confidential information in our internship journal. Replace the name with a category. Do not describe the details of confidential information.
Journal 7
I met a mentor during this internship.
- He was a graduate of my college. We used to be classmates when I learned in animation class.
- He was a volunteer in the company. He was the assistant of the studio. Therefore, he knew and could do many things. If I had some questions. I was welcomed to ask him. For example, the daily life of the company, graduation and looking for a job. Also, if we were all free, we discussed something interesting. It could help me relaxes and reduces stress.
- He also told me about an animator’s party and suggested me to participate.

Journal 5
The company had an event to promote.
I was asked to make a 15 seconds animation for social media. Finding information and details about uploading animation for social media online. Then I determined the best size of animation for social media. I got the slogan and started brainstorming.
Then I got an illustration and asked to use this illustration as the theme animation. I had to redesign the animation.
Using the shape of the illustration, meaning of the slogan to combined to create a 15-seconds animation.
Get feedback from my supervisor, modify the animation.
The accident happened, The animate should be 20-seconds. I got 4 photos and I need to add them in animation. I changed the timeline, designed new elements to connect the previous animations and photos. Created the animation for the slogan.
As a result, my supervisor was very satisfied.

Typical day like on the internship
Went to work on time, continue with my last work or I will ask my supervisor about new tasks. After I start to working, I will spend some time to brainstorm and research. The official work clothes that my supervisor wears. Shirt and tie or cravat. I started to wear it formal, but I saw other people, including other interns, their wearing is very ordinary. Therefore, I decided I would wear a shirt when I worked as my supervisor.
The typical employee work station is cubicles, I had one of desk in the cubicles. There were a lot of separate offices, some work tables for handcrafted and a photography studio.
Working hours were from 10 am to 6 pm, Monday to Friday. Lunchtime was flexible, about 12 noon to 1 pm. If all people went out, the door would be locked.
Journal 2
I mainly animated photos, illustrations, slogans, brands for the company.
I had an in-person interview with my supervisor. My supervisor read my resume, online portfolio and asked me some questions.
For example, what do you most want to do? How long can this animation be completed? Do you work alone? Can you use Adobe Creative Suite? Which app is good or not for you? Do you have a laptop with Adobe Creative Suite? How many days you can work weekly?
After the interview, I was hired.
Journal 1
Looking for an internship, I was looking for it online. I sent many resumes, but there were very few responses. Some jobs needed to be registered on the company website. I tried two famous companies. I felt unsafe and didn’t want to reveal personal information. So, I ignored this type of application.
After that, I was very anxious to wait for the result.
Finally, with the encouragement of the professor, I called the companies and sent my resume to them, and I went to the companies in person to seek internship opportunities. Finally, I got two chances. I have been to the interviews and I chose one which had more opportunities for animation, because I wanted to be an animator.
