This library was designed by Primus Arkitekter, a studio in Denmark, to replace a 1930’s building used as a factory. The sloping ceilings and skylights allow the large rooms to receive plenty of light, which I believe is key to a pleasant reading environment. The black wood panels not only gives the surface some texture but also provides a nice contrast to the glass door and windows. Also, the use of high ceilings gives the interior a sense of ample space, despite the building only being one floor.
The Seattle Central Library, built in 2004, is a good example of a modern library. Starting with the glass and steel exterior, the 11-floor building gives off a modern look. The glass panels offer a generous amount of daylight to the inhabitable spaces, which again is very essential to a reading environment. Not only that, but the various programs that the building accommodates elevated its function from a library to a public space. As traditional libraries break up their sections by floors, with little to no correlation to each other, the Seattle Library has a distinct approach in which you circulate through the different programs within the space.
The White library by Yi Architects was built in 2011, over a decade after they won the competition for the design. Another modern library which sets the tone for its future city centre, with an interestingly large cube-like shape. The double façade of the concrete and glass bricks make for a nice pattern throughout the face of the building. The inside of the building is painted all white, which with the help of the skylight from the glass roof and the 9×9 glass bricks, the interior showcases a vibrant environment. The circulation on the interior is spiraled as you move from one floor to the other, providing a very fluid connection from space to space.
