My Nursing philosophy

The philosophy of New York college of Technology’s nursing program is based on Jean Watson’s The Human Caring theory. The Caring theory focuses on Nursing care that promotes health and individual growth through care that is accepting, non-judgmental, patient-centered and holistic.  Nursing theories along with evidence- based research is essential to nursing as it guides and support nursing practice. So are nursing philosophies. Many nursing theorists and philosophers alike encompass Watson’s Caring Theory. My philosophy in nursing supports the very same theory.

My nursing philosophy is that nurses are caring, virtuous and compassionate. Regardless of the reason some individuals may enter the nursing profession, I hold it to be true that nursing chooses you, you do not chose nursing. Nurses are a selected few that hold noble characterizes of someone who is not only compassionate and caring but who is humble and diligent. Nurses advocate for their patients and their patient’s loved ones.  They whole heartedly offer their services selflessly.

Nurses understand that education is lifelong.  They aim for higher education to better their selves and for the betterment of their patients. Nurses strive to leave their patients more knowledgeable than before, making sure never to pass up an opportunity to provide teaching so that patients may take better care of themselves.

The nurse is just and non-judgement. They are vulnerable to those suffering and do their best to bring comfort to their patients. The nurse is empathic, and sensitive to the needs of patients. The ethical principle of beneficence is key to nursing practice. Nurses always aspire to do good.

To be a nurse one must first have an appreciation for humanity. Not anyone can become a nurse. Nurses are chosen. A selected few, nurses are caring, virtuous and compassionate above all other characteristics. As a nurse, upholding the above beliefs and the values of the caring theory is important since it gives nurses the proper qualifications to serve patients. One of the values is that all patients should be treated fairly and nurses understand they should not favor any one patient based on any preference. This is an offense as a nurse and values should be maintained at all levels within any given medical institution. As a nurse, it is critical that you care for every patient equally without discrimination. I believe Watson’s Caring theory supports this belief. The given theory is central to nursing practice and adopts that effective issue of caring gives promotion to the health and growth of the individual being nursed. It is a theory that all nurses should use to imitate their professional practice.
