The IS-CUCO Research Scholarship Program is looking for motivated students aiming to expand their knowledge and research skills. As the Principal Investigator of the NSF CISE-MSI grant: Information Systems meet CUltural Competencies (IS-CUCO): Enabling data-driven decision-making in underserved Hispanic populations (RF grant #71901-00 01) funded for three years with a start date of October 1, 2021, I invite you to apply anytime.

Project Objectives: The IS-CUCO project aims to analyze the effectiveness of information systems (websites, apps, and social media) designed to provide food security services in NYC and Chicago and examine how these services include cultural factors. IS-CUCO Research Scholarship Program will provide opportunities to learn about topics related to AI and Software Engineering and other job skills in high demand. The project will also allow you to interact with faculty and students (graduate and undergraduate) from other institutions. You will be a member of a collaborative team working on a project with faculty and students from City Tech, the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), North Eastern Illinois University (NEIU), and California State University at Dominguez Hills (CSUDH). Most of these institutions offer master’s and Ph.D. programs that might be of interest to you. This will help you to learn collaborative skills and expand your professional network.

Activities and Responsibilities

  • Attend a weekly meeting for professional development with the collaborative team
  • Attend a weekly meeting with the advisor to review advances in research tasks.
  • I would like you to allocate approximately 15 hours weekly to complete tasks and attend meetings.
  • Help organize annual events for professional development (workshops, hackathons, seminars, etc.)

Expected Student Outcomes

  • Improve communication skills, writing and presenting project reports, posters, and papers.
  • Improve research and coding skills, mainly Python using libraries for Machine Learning, AI, and APIs for accessing social media.
  • Improve analytical and collaboration skills.

Stipends

The scholarship can be extended up to three years with the following stipends $4500 for regular semesters (Spring and Fall) and $3000 for the summer semester.
