The artist Kendrick Lamar (born June 17, 1987) is an American rapper, songwriter, and record producer. He is regarded as one of the most skillful and successful hip-hop artists of his generation. Raised in Compton, California, Lamar embarked on his musical career as a teenager under the stage name K-Dot, releasing a mixtape that garnered local attention and led to his signing with indie record label Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE). He began to gain recognition in 2010, after his first retail release, Overly Dedicated.

One of his music videos is particularly interesting to me as it includes many captivating scenes and words. That particular video was released in 2017 and got a lot of attention. In addition to being a very well-sounding song, it also includes messages depicted with scenes. Through this song, the singer addresses Americans, but more precisely Black people, women, corrupt people and more directly to those taking part in that racial segregation and or profiling. The purpose of this song was to highlight what black people are still going through and how it affects the way they live and the way they act. The content was expressed in a lyrical and explicit way to the audience and the original oeuvre may be somewhat inappropriate for underaged people.

From the music video, it is clear that the artist put a lot of work to make things look exactly the way he wanted it to look. Scenes throughout the video have meanings and are meant to send messages to the audience. In the introduction, we can see Kendrick standing still dressed like a pope portraying “HUMBLE” manners till he starts singing with somewhat a though character.  This scene represents the “awakening”, stating that none can consider one ethnicity to be superior to another, and still expect the oppressed people to stay nice. As a side note to that scene, oppression is not “Christian”. Suddenly, from a pope driving the word of God, Kendrick turned into a different personality where many girls are sitting next to him counting money. This scene represents how media takes advantage of the hard work of others. The women counting his money also have masks on their faces which means that they are undercover. Next, a scene shows him in the middle of a dinner table covered in red with wine and bread on it, and other people sitting along. This scene depicts the famous diner Jesus had before being crucified. This scene has been interpreted in many music videos by other artists such as A$AP Ferg, Nas, and Stormzi. That scene more particularly shows that the people you just broke bread with, can betray you.

Another scene shows Kendrick in front of a group of men with their heads on fire and other streets guys in the background. He then mentioned “Dreamers”, to illustrate how racist people think, their selfish manners when they feel like someone is taking over. Their heads are on fire due to their dreams that they can’t reach and are forced to live like the guys in the far background. On another scene with a little bit of controversy, he says that he is “tired of Photoshop” and that he needs something natural then displays a girl in two screens (natural and “photoshopped”), where the girl seems to look even better natural! That scene causes a bit of controversy from the feminists. Some seemed offended for being portrayed as “photoshopped” because they use makeup. But on the other hand, some people say that he just stated his preference and that nobody should feel concerned. The meaning of the scene was tricky as he mentioned Richard Pryor who was an American stand-up comedian, and actor. He reached a broad audience with his trenchant observations and storytelling style and is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential stand-up comedians of all time.

Pryor won an Emmy Award (1973) and five Grammy Awards (1974, 1975, 1976, 1981, and 1982). In 1974, he also won two American Academy of Humor awards and the Writers Guild of America Award.

Pryor’s body of work includes the concert movies and recordings: Richard Pryor: Live & Smokin’ (1971), That Nigger’s Crazy (1974), …Is It Something I Said? (1975), Bicentennial Nigger (1976), Richard Pryor: Live in Concert (1979), Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip (1982), and Richard Pryor: Here and Now (1983). As an actor, He collaborated on many projects with actor Gene Wilder. Another frequent collaborator was actor/comedian/writer Paul Mooney.

He starred mainly in comedies such as Silver Streak (1976), but occasionally in dramas, such as Paul Schrader’s Blue Collar (1978), or action films, such as Superman III (1983).

In addition, the first-ever Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor was presented to him in 1998. He was listed at number one on Comedy Central’s list of all-time greatest stand-up comedians.[1] In 2017, Rolling Stone ranked him first on its list of the 50 best stand-up comics of all time. He also actively fought against racism and the fact that some people change their appearance just to fit into society.

A well-known scene forms an old commercial was also illustrated, where he exchanges a jar from the back of a car to another man inside another car. The original commercial scene was made by two white men and he shows that the same scene among black Americans can be interpreted as a criminal activity.

The same action is judged different when done by someone of adifferent race. Next, he then appears in a house with gun lasers pointing at him. That scene shows media attack towards African-Americans and says it’s even worse than alcohol abuse. By “Be humble! Sit down”, Kendrick illustrate what African- American have been told. He then appears in the middle of bold head black men face down (oppressed), saying “be humble, sit down”, with him in the middle signifies that he is the voice with his face facing up no matter what he is being told. The following scene shows him between a group of black people in high status with their faces up and him wearing white to tell the difference and show that he will keep the battle going.

This music video is very entertaining, but the main idea behind this video was mostly about showing the audience facts about what is going on, that racist people are brainwashing the masses so they can think negative about African American. Considering the actual situation, such oppression does not help at all, it makes some people stop caring and just do what they are mostly considered to be doing, bad things. It was an overall very interesting song with many messages that the audience needs to understand even though some of the content were a source of questioning and controversy.

From the article “against school”, we learned about all the concerns Gatto had about schooling in general. From have to go through for that long time is very difficult and were basically setup by a system in order to take advantage of kids in the long run. Furthermore, he also expressed his concerns about school system and how kid are prepared for a future labor force. Is that true and how come the vast majority of kids are still applying to school? It is obvious that school is a very convenient way of success nowadays and the department of education and teachers put a lot of effort for kids to learn and become better tomorrow. School is a bigger path no matter what one is planning to accomplish in his life. However, public schools still have a lot to do in order to improve the overall learning experience. In my opinion, Gatto probably experienced some of the worst school systems and generalizes his opinion accordingly.  The way classes are dispensed can seem overwhelming and this may give some students very different thoughts about school. However learning can be more interesting if the department of education and the teachers load more learning topics because one cause of boredom is repetition.

In the article “against school”, John Taylor Gatto explains that public school system are meant to condition children to be gullible and mindless consumers. In my personal opinion, Gatto’s thoughts about school in general is exaggerated. Everyone has his own experience about school, and all I can say is that it is difficult and takes a long time. After all, there nothing easy about life and school is just one of the many paths available except that it is more likely “promising”. Not saying that one hundred percent of those who go to school succeed, but saying that they always get something out of it. They get education, they learn how to write and read they make friends, relations and many will build professional careers. As far as I’m concerned, schools, especially public schools need improvement. That is probably what Gatto should be expressing are way to make school more enjoyable for children instead of scarring young people. Gatto said that “School has done a pretty good job of turning our children into addicts, but it has done a spectacular job of turning our children into children”. In my opinion, this is a wrong perception of the main objectives of school. First, “addict”, I doubt that and considering how mature children get for going to school, it is safe to say that Gatto probably went  through some less common situation and it affected his opinion.

Furthermore, Gatto stated “Even if they hadn’t, a considerable number of well-known Americans never went through the twelve- year wringer our kids currently go through, and they turn out all right. George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln?”, like I mentioned before, school is not the only way to succeed, but one of the best ones. One may be successful without this world most basic knowledge (good reading and writing skills), he will still struggle and be dependent to other people who went to school. Imagine the struggle of someone who doesn’t have good reading and writing abilities in this world where everything tend to be on paper and on the Internet. The jobs industry is now equivalent to paper work and have been to school is not just an advantage, it is also a requirement. Most of those in todays society without jobs or decent jobs are those with lower academic background. Some of those people might also be complaining that the society does not take them into consideration. But the reality is that nowadays in order to be a professional, one needs to have the required diploma which is only available after career completion.

In my personal opinion, I think that school prepare children to be better tomorrow, by making them go through challenging experiences which can be seen differently from one person to another. School is also a sort of security to young people. By that I mean instead of hanging in the streets, if they go to school, they will have a better chance of success. I mean, if they don’t drop off. The school system is here to guide children, not to use them. In fall 2018 more than fifty six and half million students will attend elementary and secondary schools. This show how parents are really willing to engage into it no matter how hard it can get later on. I encourage the department of education to keep assisting students and improving their learning experience.  Gatto has his own point about school that I believe is exaggerated and I hope he does not spread those thoughts to children because it may affect their feelings about school which can lead to them adopting the same thoughts about school and that is not a good thing for upcoming generations “academic education” wise.

First revision Introduction

From the article “against school”, we learned about all the concerns Gatto had about schooling in general. Essay 2 – Portrait of a word

Among the words that are very important to my family, my culture and me, there is the word “Burkindi”. By definition, it means the quality of being honest, diligent, having humility, generosity, and dignity. In other words, it is the art of being irreproachable. This word derived from the name of my country “Burkina Faso”, a landlocked country in Ouest Africa. The term “Burkina Faso” is in Moore language (spoken by more than fifty percent of my county’s population), means the country of honest men. Over there people tend to put a lot of importance in how we should live and treat each other sometimes to the point where they can break the law just pretending to achieve that.

I can remember back in high school, my friends and I were getting out of school after class. It was during the “dry season”, a lot of wind and very sunny, with the usual routine. A couple of students running to the parking lot, some to their after class sessions. I was rushing to one of my friends who used to give me a ride home. I then saw a lot of people running towards the exit of the school and other people very agitated. I couldn’t talk to anyone as everybody was rushing to see what was happening. I was mostly scared and surprised because this does not happen very often. But, by pure curiosity I went ahead and followed a couple of students out, to check for myself. When I got closer I found out that a group of people had caught a guy stealing in a store. People take this extremely seriously and sometimes people caught stealing can be seriously hurt or sometimes even killed if the police don’t show up quickly. In this situation, I admit there is nothing to be proud of, but some people are just too determined in having everybody just the same, nice, honest, generous, and they are ready to cross lines to reach that goal. While many people were calling the police, some people were saying that they should teach that thief the lesson, the hard way. Like beat him up, throw him in the mud and humiliate him. To some people, this is the only way he will remember to never steal again, and for some other people including myself, using such behaviors to teach lessons is just bad for upcoming generations. In addition, it is illegal and does not depict the image “Burkinabes” pretend to represent. Luckily, the police showed up on time and the man was arrested. People in my country are very strict and culture wise, we try very hard to be as perfect as possible.

Burkindi was widely used by one of my country’s leaders, Thomas Sankara. He was betrayed by one of own close and childhood friend Blaise Compaore who later on took over and became president. In almost all speeches Thomas Sankara gave throughout his presidency, he mentioned about being strong, honest and generous towards others and defined all of this with one word “Burkindi”. He furthermore mentioned that Burkindi should be the biggest wealth in poor countries. Of course, that does not prevent some people from being whatever they were meant to be. So no matter how strict the rules are, will still notice some conspiracy among leaders and also some social misconduct.

In addition to mutual respect, that our worthy president encouraged his compatriots to have one another, he also wanted us to adopt principles that will reflect our dignity for a better future. The word Burkindi also encourages Burkinabés (inhabitants of Burklina Faso) to adopt other morals and behaviors among which I can quote the total respect towards older people. In fact, while greeting older people, it is more respectful to kneel. But of course, that tends to fade out as time goes. The more we are getting modernized, the more traditional values we are more likely to forget about.

One more person, who also praised the word Burkindi and spread its usage among our culture, is Norbert Zongo, a Burkinabé investigative journalist who worked for a news company “L’independent”. He was one of those who fought for the country’s development and perpetuating the values of our cultures, customs, social behaviors, cultural events, and education. However, as everywhere in the world, some people just can’t be like others and will do what we are all fighting hard to prevent. He was also known for his integrity and desire to put some light in every shaded spot. His hard work paid off as he was able to expose some conspiracy, impunity, and extortion within the government of Burkina Faso. That conspiracy was related to President Blaise Compaoré. His Newspaper investigated the murder of a driver who had worked for the brother of the president Blaise Compaore. He was close to proving that the driver was tortured and killed by people close to the president and was assassinated. After his murder, regarding all he did throughout his career, his oeuvre must be kept alive and what he fought for, “Burkindi”, praised.

Many other brave men have helped to preserve and perpetuate our cultural values in many ways, but for those two individuals who lost their lives in the struggle, they will be widely honored and “Burkindi” will also be more important to us Burkinabes. Furthermore, Burkindi keeps us unified, as we will be aiming the same goal, which is the expansion of our culture and customs. It also reminds us of our most praised leader because every time we say Burkinadi, that’s what comes directly in mind. Considering how hard we care about our cultures and customs, it is important for Burkinabes, to know every single aspect of it and contribute in perpetuating good manners and respect to people who fought for our country most important wealth. What Thomas Sankara and Norbert Zongo did for our country had a very big impact in the population and the sayings “Burkindi”, no matter what will be kept in their mind forever because it represents everything about Burkinabes.

Second Rough Draft.
