Soul Craft Essay
Content
In the article “Shop Class as Soulcraft”, written by Matthew B. Crawford, it talks about the different labors in the world. Crawford mainly talks about the difference between white and blue-collar. Crawford is bias toward the blue-collar labor as seen in the article but shows us why it is better. He often recommend to readers to become a blue collar worker because he simply think they are better.  The author constantly talks on what blue collar labor can give that a white collar labor can not give. He believe that you get a better overall experience when you are doing things hands-on because you will retain more information when you do it yourself. He talks about college like it’s not good and you will learn nothing at all. I agree on that opinion and also in general school don’t teach you things that are essential for real life but just to pass school. I believe school should reintroduce vocational classes because it can give student some type of hands-on experience. I believe school should reintroduced vocational classes because students should learn something that they can use out in the real-world. I’m not saying that regular school don’t already offer useful information but it just not everything you learn in school is useful for you or the things you doing outside of school. Crawford talks about college and how he thinks about it, “In college,by contrast, many students don’t learn anything of particular application; college is the ticket to an open future. Craftsmanship entails learning to do one thing really well, while the ideal of the new economy is to be able to new learn new things, celebrating potential rather than achievement.” The author is comparing blue collar and white collar labor in this quote and saying that blue collar labor would give more experience and better understanding on what you are doing. He believe you would have more to take away when learning a certain job in that field of work.I agree on Crawford’s opinion where he believe that blue collar labor is better because it give more of an overall experience and you can have more opportunities as an worker that have an vast skill set. Crawford believes that a student’s life is determined when acquiring a certain skill set. In other words, Crawford believe that the moment a student enter college the student is determined because they are only focused on that one career. In many cases that is true because student don’t want to change majors since it would cost more to change their career so they will stick to one career. Crawfords says on page 11 on the first paragraph, “The egalitarian worry that has always attending tracking students into “college prep” and “vocational ed” is overlaid with another: the fear of acquiring a specific skill set means that one’s life is determined”. The author is that  student who entering college is getting their life determined by the major they have chosen. The students can change but it cost them to. The author doesn’t like how one’s life is determine because you simply chosen it and you must stick with it. The author believe that is not the right way or even the right option. I agree and disagree also because you are basically determined on what you do in college and also it’s a lot of money you are spending but it the most effective way to get a job that can pay a lot. Without some sort of high degree you might be able to get a high paying job coming out of nowhere. Opportunities like those are rare to find and college somewhat helps you to find that, Vocational classes should be reintroduced because it helps to give students more options. Crawford believes that blue collar labor has the most option of jobs. He doesn’t like jobs that keep inside and do nothing. He believe that “idiot” can do that just simply. He believes that hard task takes true skill and much beneficial to the workers. Crawford stated on page 24 in the paragraph 1, “But still the physical circumstances of the jobs performed by carpenters, plumbers, and auto mechanics vary too much for them to be executed by idiots…” Crawford believes that these jobs required a lot skills and also practice to be really efficient at. The “idiots” that Crawford is pointing to is the white collar workers. He believes that what their takes no skill at all and hate white collar jobs. I agree with Crawford on this opinion because I feel like office jobs doesn’t give a lot to you and plus you might even the jobs is even good. His statement that blue collar labor actually takes skills in order to the job and without those skills you can’t work as one. Crawford may siad things to banter down white collar labor but I feel like he right in many aspects. Doing something is not just simply you do something just to do it. You should be  able to take something away from anything you do anywhere. Another reason why vocational classes should added back is that white collar labor aren’t really good or even a good career. The author talks on how office like jobs gives nothing for experience and believe is a useless job. White collar labor is good in certain aspect but I believe that doing things in more big environment where all people is actively working together and not just you in cubicle working on your computer. The author states something at the end of the article why he believe blue collar is better than white, “You’re likely to be less damaged, and quite possibly better paid, as an independent tradesman than as a cubicle-dwelling tender of information systems.” The author believe that being tradesman is better than being an person who works in a cubicle. In any aspects he is right because what experiences do you gain if you just sit down in a cubicle all day and do work on the computer. He believe hands on experience  is much better than an cubicle job. With that being all said, working with your hands make you understand things better. You can feel what you did wrong with something or right. It gives you an experience that will stay with you forever. Getting us that experience make us feel like we can do something with the knowledge we gain over the year instead of wasting it on an job that barely requires any skill work. Something that requires more hard work is more rewarding than something that is easy and boring. Doing hand-on things can give us some idea of what we really want to do. Vocational classes can jump start many of us into something we might able to do in the future.
