Place controlled situations and certain base behaviors which needed to be acted out, by both the prison guards and prisoners. I feel like the reason for the mistreatment was because there were no clear instructions on what they had to do. It was left up to them how to behave and as the power of the situation became a reality to them, the extent of the abuse became even more horrendous. The same thing could be said about what happened in Abu Ghraib. Without any clear instructions from their commanders about how to handle the prisoners, they simply acted with this idea to exercise their authority however way possible.
