Persuasive Speech:

Why people shouldn’t smoke

Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience that smoking is not only bad for you, but for others too.

Central Idea: The two major reasons why smoking is bad for not only you, but to others is because it can cause harmful effects on the fetus during pregnancy and it can lead to second hand smoking to others and the benefits of being a non-smoker.

Introduction

I. In the world we live in it is very common to see someone smoking around every corner of a street and not see anything wrong with it, even though it shouldn’t be done.

II. Today I want to talk to you about why you shouldn’t smoke.

A. I’m sure everyone here knows someone who smokes, or has seen someone smoking if you don’t smoke yourselves. Though you probably don’t know how smoking can affect others who are around you.

III.I think it’s important for people to know how smoking can affect their lives.

IV. I will show you the reasons why smoking is bad and shouldn’t be done, and how smoking can have harmful effects on the fetus during pregnancy and how it can lead to second hand smoking to others, and the benefits of being a non-smoker.

(Internal Preview: Let’s begin by discussing how smoking can have harmful effects on the fetus during pregnancy, and so should not be done.)

Body

I.  Mothers should know that smoking during their pregnancies can harm the fetus.

A.. Harmful effects on the fetus include miscarriage, retardation, pre-term birth, fetal mortally-morbidity, post-partum infant death, lung disease, attention deficit, etc.

I. According to an article in 2009, in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Passive smoking, also known as environmental tobacco exposure, or second hand smoke, has been found to be as harmful as active smoking and can lead to unfavorable birth restrictions and early pregnancy loss.

II. . According to a 2007 issue of Chattanooga Times Free press (Tennessee) a pregnant woman is the oxygen source for her developing fetus. The gases in the smoke replace oxygen from red blood cells. This is leaving her and the baby without a full oxygen supply. This does the baby no good.

a. Smoking anywhere in the house is considered smoke exposure to the pregnancy.

B. Infants can also be exposed to smoking by breast feeding.

C. Exposure to smoking also leads to a decrease in the weight, height, and head circumference of the baby.

A. Babies whose mothers smoked in the first trimester of the pregnancy are more likely to have heart defects at birth.

B. Smoking during your pregnancy can have lifelong effects on your babies brain.

(Transition: Now that you know some reasons why a mother shouldn’t smoke during her pregnancy, let’s look at why people should not smoke because the affect others with second hand smoke.)

II. People need to stop smoking because they not only affect themselves, but they also affect others.

A. These people need to realize that you can also be affecting your loved ones when you smoke.

B. Everyone who smokes should realize how they are affecting others.

I. According to a 2011 article in the Annals of Internal Medicine, 1 in 5 United States adults reports smoking cigarettes.

2. . Those 1 in 5 Americans are affecting others by causing second hand smoke.

C. According to a Pediatric Anesthesia, 2010 article, children of smoking parents had a higher chance of not having oxygen delivery to the tissue.

I. A 2011 article from Top News states that,” Passive smoking is just as important and threatening to health as active smoking and for people under 16 they shouldn’t be in enclosed spaces with people who are smoking”.

a. There are more than 4,000 chemical compounds in secondhand smoke. 200 of those chemical compounds are poisonous.

b. When someone smokes a cigarette, they inhale half of the smoke, while the other half remains in the air.

c. Secondhand smoke increases the number of asthma attacks in about 200,000 to a million children who have asthma. Secondhand smoke also makes these attacks a lot more severe.

d. Secondhand smoke can increase your chances in getting, Lung Cancer, Heart Disease, Asthma, and many other sicknesses.

c. Secondhand smoke affects children the most because their breathing rate is faster than adults.

d. Children who spend one hour in an very smoky room inhale enough toxic chemicals to equal smoking 10 cigarettes.

II. These are some of the reasons why you shouldn’t smoke because others are affected.

(Transition: Now that you know some reasons why people should not smoke because the affect others with second hand smoke, let’s look at the benefits of being a non-smoker.)

III. There are many benefits of being a non-smoker.

A. According to a 2011 article from Toxicology & Industrial Health, smoking can cause cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, as well as lung cancer.

i. Though if you’re a non-smoker, then you won’t have a great chance of getting these diseases.

ii. You won’t smell like cigarette smoke all the time.

iii. You won’t cause others harm by causing second hand smoke.

iiii. You’ll also live a better and longer life without having a habit of smoking.

Conclusion:

I. In conclusion, I hope that you have a better understanding of why you shouldn’t smoke because it can cause harmful effects on the fetus during pregnancy and it can lead to second hand smoking to others, and how you can benefit from being a non-smoker.

II. I hope that you now believe that smoking is not necessary and can be harmful not only to you but also to others.

III. If more people stop smoking in the future, our world would be much better.
