LNG1100 Fall 2018 Group Presentation Schedule, Topics, and Guidelines (10% 0f your total grade)
  • The purpose of the presentation is to (1) help you develop a more in-depth understanding of the sociolinguistic concepts, (2) encourage you to do research and connect different ideas with class readings, and (3) supplement my lecture, which in turn helps your class appreciate the concepts discussed in a different light.
  • You need to prepare a simple PowerPointand end your presentation with 2-3 discussion questions. The presentation should be around 15 minutes long, followed by a 5-minute discussion. The point of the presentation is to inform your class of your research on a particular topic and to facilitate a discussion. Consider yourself my teaching assistant.
  • You need to email me (hlo@citytech.cuny.edu) or make an appointment with meto discuss the materials and specific topic of your choice a week before your presentation date. You do not need to do any reading response on the date of your presentation, but it is important that you do the readings as you need to make a connection between your topic and ideas in the reading.
Group 1 – Week 7 (Thur, Oct 11) – Gabriel, Joseph Smith, Tamara: Conduct two case studies investigating linguistic conflicts in two multilingual societies. Focus on describing how conflicts between two groups (e.g., social groups, ethnic groups etc.) can be examined from a sociolinguistic perspective. (Suggestions: South Africa, Belgium, Group 2 – Week 9 (Tue, Oct 23) – Atasha, Sebastian, Ronaldo, Svetlana Conduct two case studies on the language policies and planning of two different multilingual or post-colonial countries.  (Suggestions: Singapore, India, New Zealand, Hong Kong, etc.) Group 3 – Week 10 (Thur, Nov 1) – Jada Alvarez, Khan, Iqra, Joey Discuss the connection between sociolinguistics and the law. Discuss cases where linguistic issues were consequential to the outcome of legal cases. Group 4 – Week 11 (Thur, Nov 8) – Nohemi, Lyvengton, Macro, Jayda Battle Explore language use in mass media. Consider investigating language use in movies, twitter, etc. Group 5 – Week 14 (Thur, Nov 29) – Christian, Beatris, Jennifer, Nick Muster Discuss how gender identity is constructed through language use OR conduct a survey collecting opinions on a gender issue from a linguistic point of view. Group 6 – Week 15 (Thur, Dec 6) – Fatima, Cristal, Joseph Agyeman, Andrea Sos Present two articles that discuss the connection between language and cultural/racial identity. (From New York Times, The Atlantic, Slate, etc.)   I also welcome any ideas or suggestions if you prefer coming up with your own topic. Please speak to me in person.
