Last week you were asked to look for literary devices, figurative language like metaphors, similes, and alliteration partly in an attempt to bring out awareness for the great writing in Nabokov’s book.  He first wrote it in Russian, his native language, then wrote it in English, and he is a master of the English language.

One of the attributes of his book is its avoidance of profane language despite its adult subject matter.  The author does, however, create lots of innuendo by using tame words for body parts, like “My life was handled by little Lo in an energetic, matter-of-fact manner as if it were an insensate gadget unconnected with me,” and “pentapod monster,” and  “We must remember that a pistol is the Freudian symbol of the Ur-father’s central forelimb.”

    Please answer the following:

    a)  What is the difference between a sign and a symbol?

    b)  Please list some symbols we use for traits like bravery or sloppiness; for whole countries; for religions, for emotions or feelings, and for body parts.   We are not merely talking about words (as in books), but about things that represent other things, like a heart being a symbol of love.

Please complete this simple assignment before our Feb. 9 class.

    a) The difference between a sign and a symbol is that signs are more straightforward and have a ‘fixed’ meaning, while symbols are more ‘layered’ and can have multiple meanings depending on the context and perspective of the viewer.
    b) Bravery: Lion, shield, sword.
Sloppiness: Pile of rubbish, messy room/scene.
Countries: United States: Baldeagle, stars and stripes flag.
    Religions: Christianity: Cross.
Emotions/Feelings: Love: heart, sadness: teardrop, anger: red face.
Body Parts: Eyes: vision, hands: helping hand, work or creation.

    1. A sign is a surface-level message and often has little room for interpretation. Like a red light at an intersection has little room for leeway, you have to stop completely.

    2.

    Bravery – Lion

    Sloppiness – Garbage bags, landfill

    Countries – American Flag (USA),

    Religion – Virgin Mary (Christianity)

    Emotion – Heart (Love)

Body Part – Pistol (Male genital)

    a) What is the difference between a sign and a symbol?

A sign is an actual physical object typically portraying a rule of some kind whereas a symbol can be anything. Symbols don’t even have to be a physical object. They don’t have to be anything in particular. The symbol’s job is to represent something else.

    b) Please list some symbols we use for traits like bravery or sloppiness; for whole countries; for religions, for emotions or feelings, and for body parts. We are not merely talking about words (as in books), but about things that represent other things, like a heart being a symbol of love.

    bravery : Buffalo
    sloppiness: Sloth
    whole countries: Flags
    religions: Cross
emotions or feelings: Heart for love
    body parts: Peach for butt

A sign, usually more upfront tells you about something. Whether it be direction or warning, a symbol is much more subtle and could have layered meanings ultimately doing the same thing. It’s usually hints.

    Bravery – Lion

    sloppiness – Flies

    country – Maple syrup(Canada)

    religion – hijab

    emotion – teardrop (sadness)

body part – Fist (indication of strength)
