ENG2000-E225 Perspectives in Lit, SP2016 (Fridays)

My name is Luis Carbajal. I have been living in New York City since 2010 and I absolutely love it! My favorite place is Central Park because I like to run, have picnics with friends, or simply read a good book under a tree. I used to hate school because high school required me to memorize things, answer questions, and write a lot of papers on topics I didn’t care about. However, I was always interested in technology and, as I was learning about it, I came across computer programming. For this reason, my perception of school began to change. I decided to go back to school and I enrolled in City Tech because it has a good program in Computer Information Systems. This program is mostly hands-on which is really helpful for me because I am a visual learner. I am in my third year in the program and my dream is to become a computer programmer and one day make my own applications. I am currently interning at Lehman College as a Web Master. Some of my short goals for this year are: read more, travel to Mexico, and enjoy more time with my loved ones.

I love fiction books because they allow me to escape the real world and use my own imagination to find out more details. Another reason why I love fiction books is because they are more fun to read than non-fiction. Therefore, out of the three texts read in class, my favorite reading is “The Story of an Hour” written by Kate Chopin because it involves many events and emotions in such a short time. Chopin writes of Mrs. Mallard’s heart condition, which means that if she gets surprised or distressed she could die. So, when her sister tells her that her husband is killed in an accident, she goes through a series of mental and emotional events. Her ‘unknown’ personality comes out suddenly and many mysteries remain unsolved. At the end, the story made me rethink what had really happened with Mrs. Mallard that led to her death. This is because at first, freedom seems like a terrible thing to Mrs. Mallard, and then in less than an hour her feelings change to overwhelming joy. At the end “The Story of an Hour” reveals to me that we should enjoy our loved ones more because life and people can change drastically in less than an hour. I think the selection I made reveals to others that I am a person who likes to enjoy and explore other worlds.
