How is a child supposed to know something they were never taught? Does the blame for their ignorance fall onto the parents, or do we wait until the child is old enough to take blame for not educating themself on a subject they were never required to know. As a young child, I distinctively remember being told I was “too American”from foreign family members, being berated as a toddler for having severe arachnophobia when those exist everywhere in the tropics, and most importantly not knowing the language of my heritage. My diction never affected relationship with my peers. However, family members had always made me insecure of my background. When I could not< their dialects layered behind rich accents, I just smiled and nodded until I could grasp what they had wanted to say. As a child, that was all I could do.
