The time is winter 2014, school was out for Christmas and new year’s and for any family that means travelling and meeting up with the rest of the family for a big feast. I always we would go meet up with my aunts, uncles and cousins and of course as done with hopefully more Hispanics we would stay over for the next few days, at most 3 days. During this time, it was common for the kids to do whatever we wanted if we didn’t interrupt the moms who would be cooking up all types of food and the dads who were either talking and drinking amongst each other and watching the kids or helping the moms by getting any additional supplies to have dinner ready on time. It was common for my family to be take in religion during this time and the staple of this was by walking outside in honor of Baby Jesus around 9PM, this is of course all done in Spanish– this was the first year I had realized on some sort of mental level I was not speaking the same as anyone there- I had a very heavy accent and to me it had become a very big deal.
