March 12 (2) after using semicolons, now what?

To make the semicolons work better, we have to do some thinking.

A semicolon looks like a fancy comma, but it acts like a period. Please keep this in mind. Most students are never quite clear about using semicolons and most semicolons end up wrongly used.

We want to learn how to use them, but–if it makes you less stressed–you rarely have to use semicolons since most of them can be replaced by periods.

Why use a semicolon?

a) you may wish to show that the two adjacent ideas are so closely related that a period would separate them too strongly.

b) it is a cosmetic way to fix a comma splice or run-on sentence error without having to add a conjunction. On a word processor, editing in a conjunction is not a problem, but if you have a handwritten document or a printout to hand in and cannot reprint the document, you can simply draw in a dot over the too-weak comma using a black-ink pen.

Now one more thing to help with semicolons.

Think of the prefix, “trans.” Many words begin with it. Make a list of as many words beginning with “trans” that you know, without consulting a dictionary. Your goal is to think of at least five in addition to “transgender,” which probably every student would list. Please post your words here on OpenLab.
