What are the confirmation hearings for Loretta Lynch really about? How does this fit in with what we’ll be talking about, involving the Constitution and (for a completely separate theme that’s not in the Constitution) political parties?

Today it’s Ashton Carter, President Obama’s nominee for Defense Secretary, who’s getting grilled by a Senate panel. (We’ll be looking at the Constitution next class, including the fact that a presidential nominee has to be confirmed by a simple majority vote in the Senate.) As with Loretta Lynch, he’ll be confirmed, but Republican Senators will use his hearings as a forum to air their criticisms of the Obama administration. The nominee in the hotseat has quite a balancing act to do: be both loyal to Obama and independent of him, when it comes to stands on specific issues.

What political news stories are you folks following?
The political news that I’m following is a captive Jordanian pilot being burned alive. It created a wave of anger in Jordan and Arab.
