This course explored the theories of appearance, clothing, and fashion and their impact on cultural identities, gender perceptions, and consumer behavior. By analyzing contemporary dress across various cultures, both within and outside the United States, I gained insight into how dress serves as a communication system, expressing individuality and signaling one’s role in social structures such as kinship, economy, religion, and politics. The course also examined how technologies and types of dress reflect societal beliefs about morality, hygiene, rituals, and beauty, deepening my understanding of the cultural and behavioral factors that shape fashion trends.
