Ghana – Culture

 

Foods– Foods in Ghana are mostly made with spices and herbs causing the foods to be hot and spicy. According to Advameg, (2021)Meals are sided with rice, cassava, Kelewele (what we know as plantains), and Yam. Cultural foods for Ghanians are Fufu (Cassava mashed into thick doughy texture sided with beansand gravy), Jollof Rice, and Kenkey. (Advameg, 2021)

 

Religion– More than one half of Ghanians claim the religion of Christian, including Pentecostal, Mormonism,and Baptist, The second most popular religion in Ghana is Muslim, Lastly we have religions that are primitive to Ghana such as Akan and Mawu. (Kwintessential LTD, 2021)

 

Launguage– The official launguage of Ghana is English. According to US Dept of State, There are over 90 different dialects, launguages and vernacular in Ghana, including the domestic launguages of Akan, Moshi-Dagomba, and Ga. (US DEPT OF STATE, 2020)

 

Customs–  Ghananians believe family is important, and families socialize with each other often, to even is rude when someone spends too much time alone. Ghanaian children are taught to assist at home with cooking, cleaning, chores and with siblings. Holidays are important to Ghanians are Eid al-Adha, Christmas, and Easter, during these holidays families unify to celebrate.

 

In Ghana greeting is meaningful, and is considered respectful. In passing, it is expected to greet or be greeted, and is offensive especially to the elders. When addressing one another it is polite to use formal titles like aunt, uncle, madam, and sir. Public affection is not condones, and considered poor behavior.

 

 

Clothing- Traditional Ghana clothing include the smock and the kente cloth. Smocks are mostly worn by the men. Smocks are made by a native cloth of Northern Ghana called the Gonja cloth.According to AFS- USA, Gonja cloth is made by dyed cotton usually woven by hand. A smock remind one of an oversized shirt, and has a “U”or “V” shaped neckline, and is designed with embroidery. (AFS USA, 2021)

 

Kente Cloth is also native to Ghananian people. Kente cloth is a colorful handwoven fabric designed with symbolic patterns. This cloth is worn for parties, celebrations,and other big events. Both men and women wear kente cloth, but male and female drape them differently. According to AFS USA Men wear there cloth wrapped around the shoulder resembling a Greek Toga. And women wear theirs as a 2 piece set, one cloth forming a skirt, and the top peice as a shall.( AFS USA, 2021)
