December 12th, 2020

Thank you all for working hard this semester. On Thursday, December 17th from 2:30 pm to 4 pm, there will selected presentations. If you are asked to present, you just need to give the same presentation one more time. You can modify it, but there is no need to start from scratch. If you are not selected, don’t worry. There have been many students who received an excellent grade who were not among the selected presenters: The department usually chooses students who worked on very different projects, not similar ones. So, making the decision is always a challenge to us faculty.

In addition, here is a reminder concerning required materials to post on OpenLab:
– Project Proposal (including budget, calendar etc.)
– Poster (PDF)
– Slide show of one’s presentation (PDF)
– Project reflection (1.5 – 2 pages, single spaced. This needs be more detailed than what is in the “Conclusion” on one’s poster).
This info. can be found at this page:

Every student’s grade will be discussed, examined, and determined by the department, not one or two individual instructor. In addition to the finalized project, the process is very important. Therefore, you all need to upload all the essential/required materials on OpenLab.

Thank you.

November 7, 2020

As discussed at the beginning of the fall, in ENT 4499, after the 10th session, class will not meet during the 11th and 12th weeks of the semester. Then, during the 13th and 14th week, during their regular class time period, all students are scheduled to give their individual presentation for 10 minutes. Then, there will be 5 minutes for Q & A.

Then, on Thursday, December 17th, from 2:30 pm to 4 pm, there will be selected presentations. If you are chosen, you need to give the same presentation one more time to the entire department. It is possible that you make a good grade even if your are not selected. We tend to select students who worked on projects, which are very different from each other. You all should be available to either present or to be in the audience.

Thank you.

Writing Tutor:

While you are still a student, I always advise everyone to take advantage of all resources on campus. After your proposal is approved, it is also a good idea to consult with a writing tutor to see whether he/she has any recommendation in terms of craft of writing. I found this e-mail address to make an appointment for the purpose: CityTechWritingCenter@gmail.com. You shouldn’t just send a document. You need to make an appointment first.

Hope you are well.

It is the beginning of October now. You should have had at least one meeting with your technical advisor at this point.

Your ePortfolio should have the basic documents such as your proposal (approved), agreement form, and meeting form. If you are curious about what the culmination students did this past academic year, here is the link to their OpenLab group: https://openlab.citytech.cuny.edu/groups/ent-4499-culmination-project-sp-fa-2020/

Then, it is also a good time to start thinking of how you structure your presentation. It is not too early! Each session should be informative and well-presented. Everyone will present for 10 minutes. Plan wisely. You have about two months from now. For your convenience, this is the YouTube link of the selected presentations, Spring 2020 (below):

Best!

Re: Students with technology needs

I would like to share with you an e-mail from the Provost’s Office. If you need a tablet or laptop for your schoolwork, please read this announcement below carefully, and contact the college:

> Dear Colleagues,

If there are students in your classes that seem to be struggling because they do not have the needed technology, please encourage them to apply for an iPad or Chromebook at: https://www.citytech.cuny.edu/loaner/

If students need a laptop or a hot spot (MiFi) for internet access, please  provide the information requested on the Survey Monkey site (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/studenttechneeds) so that we can also reach out to these students with targeted information.

Some potential guidelines:

1.     Student complains they can only attend class and submit writing assignments on their phone – they may need an iPad. Please encourage students to apply at; https://www.citytech.cuny.edu/loaner/

2.     Students need access to basic cloud-based software. They may need a Chromebook. Please ask students to apply for a device at: https://www.citytech.cuny.edu/loaner/

3. Your course has advanced software needs. Students may need to virtually log into campus computers. Laptops or Macbooks may be required. Please indicate their need on the survey.

4. Student does not seem to have reliable access to internet or has expressed concerns that they have data limits on their plans which prevents them from accessing online classes or completing assignments. Please indicate on the survey that they need a hot spot (MiFi).

Thank you in advance for your time and attention to this. We appreciate that you encouraged students with technology needs to apply for a device and completed this survey for students needing a laptop or MiFi
