Today we will be discussing number systems and computer architecture. Please watch all the videos. Be prepared to watch them several times as you wade through your blackboard quiz and homework. The quiz is focusing on the vocabulary and the homework is focusing on converting numbers between the different number systems.

Vocabulary
Word | Definition |
---|---|
Numeric Systems | |
Binary | A two-digit (Base-2) numerical system |
Decimal | A ten-digit (Base-10) numerical system |
hexadecimal | a sixteen-digit (Base-16) numerical system |
ASCII | American Standard Code Information Interchange, converts computers data which is numbers into letters. ASCII assigns one bit of binary code to a letter or symbol |
About transistors | |
micro-transistor | A transistor is a type of a semiconductor device that can be used to both conduct and insulate electric current or voltage. A transistor basically acts as a switch. On or Off. |
Bit | one single transistor or one binary digit. |
Byte | 8 bits |
computer Architecture | |
Mother board | contains CPU and RAM |
CPU | Central processing unit. Brain of the computer. Processes information and carries out commands |
RAM | random access memory. Short term memory used to perform calculations. You cannot store information in the RAM. It clears out everytime you shut down the computer |
BUS | a link that allows the transfer of data between components |
hard drive | Persistent storage: long term storage. Saves data even when machine is off. |
Graphics card | a printed circuit board that controls the output to a display screen. |
Expansion slots | used to upgrade machine with additional cards |
power supply | networks power system to drive all electrical components |
Computer peripherals | input and output devices: mouse, keyboard, monitor |
