Muhammad Ahmed ENG2575 D94 Today’s Reflections

Today’s work of 150 and 350 summaries have helped me get a better gauge at summarizing chapters. My partner helped me realize which parts could be cut out and which could be added. He helped me realize I had way too many run on sentences. I was able to turn those run on sentences to actual sentences. I could still use a refresher on when to end sentences. When I was reading my partners summary I realize that I hadn’t used many transition words and need to keep that in account for next time. Overall the day was a success when it came to making myself better at summarizing.

Muhammad Ahmed ENG2575 D94 Summary Chapter 5

Nicholas Carr talks about how technology has greatly surpassed its earlier expectations and its effects. As referenced by Alan Turning the man who laid out the blueprint for the modern computer, he believed that his machine would be the future but was discouraged by the speed of the machine as humans were able to render photos faster than computers at the time. The point is further demonstrated by the mention of the internet and how it has changed everything, as every type of information we could hope for is now online and the computer along with the internet has consumed all our media, from Pictures, MP3s, and Movies. The internet is a two way medium, as you can consume media but also create media for others to consume and enjoy. By 2009 the average adult spent more than 12 hours a week on the internet doubling from 2005. The increase use of computers and the internet has contributed to the declining attention spans. Many media companies from newspapers to TV shows and movies are chopping up their content to attract more people lower attention spans. Carr also brings in experts who state that the overuse of internet has changed how our brains are wired.

Muhammad Ahmed ENG2575 D94 “U Can’t Talk Ur Professor Like This” Summary

According to Molly Worthen students are not being professional in the classroom and it is leading to a declining relationship between the professor and students. She references her experiences along with other professors who have received emails that are written like text messages and not as one would expect from a professional environment.  She states that this is not related to privilege as students from the wealthy and poor backgrounds are guilty of this. The article also mentions that the proper etiquette is not new but is also not very old as in 1834 the sophomore class at Harvard vandalized and harassed a professor. After being punished by the principal the junior class retaliated by burning effigies of the principal.
