subject : Summary of Anderson’s Chapter 11, “beginning a communication”

In chapter 11, according to Anderson, the objective to learn in beginning a communication is: to motivate readers to pay attentions, to help readers find what they need, to encourage readers to read your message with an open mind, to identify the background information of your readers, to pick right the length for your introduction, to adapt your beginning to your readers ‘cultural background, and finally to address unethical practice. In motivating your readers to pay attention, Anderson suggests different guidelines to follow such as providing an informative subject line in case of emails and memos. Secondly he suggests to refer to the readers request and finally to offer help to the readers to solve a problems. In helping readers find what they, he first recommended to state your main point, secondly to provide a forecasting statement a finally to include a summary. To encourage readers to read your message with an open mind, Anderson encourages presenting yourself as a partner not as a critic or a competitor, to delay the presentation of your main point and to establish your credibility. In picking the right length for your introduction, Anderson argues that the writers don’t need to give the readers they information the already know. He suggests offering them information such as the reason they should read he communication, the main point of the communication, the organization and scope of the communication and finally the background information they need in order to understand and use the communication. He recommends to offers the reader enough times to digest the communication and information to be provided so that the readers will not feel criticized or rush off their readings.
