Weekly Writing Assignment, Week 10

After watching this week’s lecture, your team should do the following:

  1. Establish another communication channel for team discussion besides email (you may use email, but you should have another channel that supports easier and faster communication among the team members).
  2. Discuss and decide amongst yourself which project your team chooses from last week’s brainstorming exercise.
  3. Create a shared folder on Google Drive and add all team members to the folder as Editors
  4. One team member should create a Google Doc in the shared folder. In this document, write a brief memo with TO (Prof. Ellis), FROM (all team members’ first and last names), DATE, SUBJECT (Collaborative Project Topic). In the content area, write a few sentences describing the scientific or technical problem that you will research for your collaborative project. Include any information about how your deliberations and discussion might have focused your topic from what one of your team members’ presented in the brainstorming exercise.
  5. Each team member should copy-and-paste your completed memo into a comment made to this Weekly Writing Assignment post. This demonstrates that all team members can access your shared Google Drive folder and its files.

For this week’s homework, you should discuss how to begin your research. Perhaps delegate one resource to each team member to find a few possible sources each. For example, one team member should look in IEEExplore, one team member should look in Academic Search Complete, etc. for library-based resources, including also General OneFile (Gale), Ebook Central, and others here.

As a team we decided to focus our collaborative project on the technical problem of Cybersecurity. The problem that arises with cybersecurity is that with the continuous growth of the internet and technological development security risk continues to be a topic many users overlook. Protecting your data on the internet is crucial because of how people can manipulate that information for their benefit. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, about 67% of users encountered at least one attempted cybersecurity attack. As a community, we will need to come together to spread awareness of the importance of cybersecurity before more people fall victim to its ways. This problem will affect many social media websites which are often targeted for hackers to get information out of users. However, this can be solved by enhancing cybersecurity awareness for users and making cybersecurity programs much easier access to users. We decided on this topic because we believe it is one of the most pressing issues in today’s society and we wanted to spread awareness about the importance of cybersecurity and how people can keep their data and information safe.

Our team decided to focus our collaborative project on the technical problem of how the spread of misinformation and false news can be prevented. The problem is that anyone can create a website or a post and lead people on with the wrong information. Those exact same people will then spread the misinformation they acquired to others and before you know it, millions of people believe in it. A solution to this is by implementing an algorithm or a feature that scans any website or social media that allows people to upload anything. After what is being scanned is finished, it will redirect the user to trusted sources providing the necessary information the user was researching for. We came to this decision by putting in a vote of which topic we liked. The topic with the most votes would be considered our topic for the project.

As a team, we decided to focus our collaborative project on the technical problem of energy wasting. Energy wasting means consumption of water, gas, electricity, etc. when nothing useful is performed. It is very important not to waste energy since natural sources are limited and humans depend on energy for everything. There are few solutions for how to cut energy wasting such as switch to renewable energy, reduce methane leaks, boost energy-saving tools for households, etc. Our research shows that energy wasting is a problem that doesn’t have one solution which solves that problem completely. At the same time, energy wasting is an actual problem which should be solved. We want to share our research results with others through this research project, because wise use of energy today, will help our future generation. Our generation should concentrate on reducing waste of energy and try to reduce it as much as possible.
