Identity Theft
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) received more than 5.88 million fraud reports in 2021, a 19% increase from the previous year. Reports of associated financial losses topped $6.1 billion, an increase of more than 77% compared with 2020. Identity theft complaints topped the list of fraud reports the FTC received in 2021, with 1,434,695 complaints. Identity theft made up about 24% of the 5,883,409 reports of fraud, identity theft and other complaints.
