Literacy Narrative Due Monday

Bring in a printed, stapled, double-spaced copy of your Literacy Narrative on Monday, September 3rd. (We’ll figure out how to post it in your OpenLab Portfolio later in the semester.)

Late papers will be marked down.

And here’s a fun short video of talk show host and comedian Trever Noah on being able to speak fluently with many accents.

Use these written instructions or search the web for a video tutorial on MLA Basic Formatting Guidelines in Word, Google Docs, or whatever word processing program you are using.

Literacy Narrative Assignment

Literacy Narrative Assignment Fall 2019

Hey 1pm & 2:30 class & lab! Bring a total of 3 copies of your draft for peer workshop today, Monday, September 16. You’ll be working in groups of three.

(Note: Remember that 60% of your final grade for this class is earned with credit points for ungraded but credited informal writing assignments you hand in, which includes drafts of essays due for scheduled peer workshop.)

Homework for Monday, Sept 9

Write a response to Baldwin’s essay on Black English (about 300 words, informal). Pick out a specific a sentence, passage, or phrase that connects with your experience in some way. In other words, Baldwin’s essay arose out of a specific time and place; how do you think your experiences compare? Type up your response and bring it to class on Monday.

For Thursday, Sept 5 (Monday classes held)

For Thursday, September 5 read and annotate the essay I handed out to you in class, If-Black-English-Isn’t-A-Language-Then-Tell-Me-What-Is-James-Baldwin

How to Annotate a Text

Sample Annotated Text

Recommended reading (but not required): Toni Morrison’s Nobel Lecture serves as an apt companion piece to Baldwin‘s polemic.

Also recommended, as a companion piece to Tan’s essay, is Maxine Hong Kinston’s “The Misery of Silence.”

Writing Assignment for Wednesday, Sept 4

Hello Writers!

Welcome to the class, everybody!

Next week’s readings and writing assignment are posted below, and also in “Assignments.”  Remember that Thursday is a “conversion” day and Monday classes are held. I’ll be editing and adding to the course syllabus and schedule I gave you on Wednesday, so check back after the weekend for updates.

For 9/4 print, read, and bring to class:  Mother-Tongue-by-Amy-Tan

Also for Weds, write a brief, informal response to “Mother Tongue.” How does your experience compare to hers? What words, sentences, or passages stand out for you? Quote from the text to support your points and/or to begin your response.  (~250-300 words) Print your response and also bring to class.

For Thursday, 9/5, print and read: If-Black-English-Isn’t-A-Language-Then-Tell-Me-What-Is-James-Baldwin
