Law In Culture

The source I choose for my law in culture is a short films called ” Capturing the Friedmans” releasing in 2003  which is a cases that happened in 1980s created by Andrew Jarecki.. This is a documentary  It is based on the 1980s child molester inquiry cases involving upper middle class Jewish families Arnold and Jesse Friedman. The family’s existence was abruptly changed when late Arnold entered a guilty plea to the charge and received a prison term. While subsequently admitting guilt, Jesse claims that “his father had raped him as a child in an effort to get a less severe sentence”

Law in Culture

The source I have chosen for my Law in Culture Project is a true crime documentary called “Girl in the Picture”. An American Netflix original documentary, directed by Skye Borgman, tells the story of a girl named Suzanne Sevakis, also known as Sharon Marshall who was found dying on the side of the road and identified as Tonya Hughes. Later on in the documentary her 6 year old son Michael, gets kidnapped by someone who’s know as Tonya Hughes husband and Sharon Marshall’s father. I chose this documentary because I heard a lot of good reviews about it and my cousin actually seen it and told me about it and thinks I would really like it since I’m into true crime. I also chose it because I heard that it took police and detectives years to figure out almost everything in this case and still to this day not everything is figured out.

Law in Culture

The source I have chosen for my assignment is a memoir called ‘My Beloved World’. The book was published January 15, 2013. It is about Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s life, starting from childhood and going into adulthood. She describes her life as a child growing up in the Bronx, and all of the struggles that came with that. As the years go by, she chooses to go to Princeton and Yale Law School. She goes into detail about her time there and her experiences during and after graduating. I felt that this book was perfect for this assignment because I want to work with something that I love.

Law in Culture!

The source I have chosen for my Law in Culture Project is a show called How to Get Away with Murder, which is an American TV show that focuses on a group of law school students their criminal defense professor selects/a practicing attorney, who is known as Annalise Keating, for her fierce and strong black woman with tremendous power effects in the courtroom. The show deals with new cases and involves their personal issues as well. I want to focus on the cases that they deal with and how the law school students who are at the top of their class help Annalise with her subject jurisdiction in the Criminal Court. I chose this show in particular because it really portrays the background and all the analytical research, communications, assisting the attorney with witnesses, drafting statements, and many more. It’s a great example and correlation to my major being a paralegal and how the legal duties occur in a firm and in a court. I also recommend anyone to watch this show because it really is interesting. The student and professor, Annalise Keating, end up killing someone, and they try to protect each other and find an alibi to be proven innocent. In this show, not only do you have great examples of paralegal duties, but you also understand how our legal system works and state-wide jurisdiction. You see many examples of disparities in mass incarceration in the black community and how they’re treated differently. Professor Annalise takes a Death Row case as the defender and takes it to the Supreme Court of the United States. It’s on Netflix, by the way!

Law in Culture

I chose “The FBI Files” which is an American television series which is about past FBI cases where reenactments of interviews are showed. The series has many cases that I want to dive deeper into. I chose this because I’m interested in the Law Enforcement aspect of law and i’m interested in how the FBI operates.

Law in Culture

I chose the source ” Abducted at plain sight” which is a true crime documentary film created by Skye Borgman. This is a documentary based on the true story of Jan Broberg Felt who was kidnapped by her neighbor, it covers details of the abductions as well as showing how the case was resolved. This documentary has received multiple awards including the ” Newport Beach Film Festival” as well as many others. I chose this case since I am highly interested in true crime and like when the victims are alive to tell the story and spread awareness about issues like this.

The show I chose is called “Suits”. Suits is an American legal drama series created by Aaron Korsh which premiered on June 23, 2011. It has 9 seasons. You can watch it on Amazon prime video, YouTube and peacock. The show is fictional and based on a New York law firm.we get to see how a law office functions and how the different roles such as lawyers, paralegals and legal secretaries  come into play. It’s centered on a college dropout working side by side with one of the best lawyers in the city while keeping his background a secret from everyone. I’ve always wanted to watch it and I’ll keep y’all updated.

Resumes posted!

Hello Students!

Great work today providing comments on each other’s resumes!  I hope everyone found our discussion useful.  I’ve posted all the resumes we reviewed in “Class notes & materials” under today’s notes.

Please use what you learned in today’s discussion, from the many samples we’ve reviewed, and information in ch. 2, to revise and improve your draft resume.  Then please email your revised resume as an attached Word document (not a link!) to me before the start of class on Tuesday, Sept. 20.  Here are a few reminders:

  • List education and work experience in reverse chronological order (from most to least recent).
  • PROOFREAD!!  Your resume should not have any errors.
  • Always be TRUTHFUL!  Don’t say anything that is untrue, even if you think it will help you get the job.  You are impressive enough!  You just need to express it effectively.

I really look forward to reading your revised resumes!  I will email comments to each of you that you can incorporate into your final resume, which will be graded according to the rubric in the assignment.

Have a terrific weekend!

The source i have chose is Watch When They See Us. When They See Us is a 2019 American crime drama television miniseries written by Ava DuVernay . The film is about 5 teenagers that were accused of rape by a white lady. Many people knew it wasn’t true , but went with the lady’s side because she was white. While interrogated each one of the 5 boys would get beat by police officers. I chose this document because it says a lot about The history of racism in the United States.

Law Office

The Law Office I decided I want to work for is Morgan & Morgan, located right by the Empire State Building, 350 5th Ave Suite 6705, New York, NY 10118. This firm is a personal injury firm meaning they have attorneys who represent people who have been injured. Morgan & Morgan is a big law firm and they have many different locations and is known as America’s Largest Injury Law Firm. I’m interested in working at this Law firm because personal injury law is what I’ve been leaning towards more recently because I want to help others like my lawyer helped me. I also really appreciate how they have this “If we don’t win, you don’t pay” rule. That’s really great because people who get injured, are suing because they need money to cover medical expenses and for a law firm to not be able to get them any type of money and still charge for there services is pretty messed up in my opinion.
