It is important to understand why ransomware is dangerous and what better way to understand it than to learn of one of the biggest ransomware attacks of all time. This form of ransomware was spread through email attachments meant to look like a real email with a pdf attached. This attack infected over 250,000 systems and the hackers asked for $400 from each of these systems in order for them to gain access to their files and computer again. The estimated amount of money lost is around $3 million but there is no way to get the direct cost of damages due to the hackers using their crypto addresses as the way to obtain their money. This was an important step in the progress of ransomware because hackers now have multiple ways of spreading their ransomware and this example of it spreading through email is just one of many ideas that hackers can utilize to spread their ransomware.
