Oral Health for Nonprofessionals

The coursework for the dental hygiene program at New York City College of Technology includes classes that are not strictly dental hygiene. Two such classes are Microbiology and Public Speaking. Students in these classes come from a variety of backgrounds and fields of study.

As a dental hygienist, patients will also come from many walks of life, and will have different levels of education regarding oral health. It is imperative for the clinician to have a thorough understanding of oral health and to be capable of explaining complex information to the layperson.

In both Microbiology and Public Speaking, I created presentations on oral conditions for classmates who were not part of the dental hygiene program. The presentation for Microbiology was especially challenging because a handful of students were in the dental hygiene program. I wanted to make that presentation both clear and basic enough for the nonclinicians, but also novel enough to engage the clinical students. Please look at both presentations below.

Microbiology – Microbial Diseases of the Oral Cavity

Public Speaking – Diseases of the Mouth
