Reflection of Woodhull Clinical Site

My clinical experience at Woodhull Women’s Health Pavilion Clinic on the 8th floor has being remarkable. This experience is the most valuable professional experience that I have had to date. This site has truly provided me with the best of both worlds. I have had the opportunity to observe experts in women’s health provide care to their patients. In addition, I have seen how nurses can positively affect the lives of women and their families.

Nurse Hoo Chong, who along with her team is creating a difference in the community, professionally manages the clinic. Nurse Hoo Chong has displayed a great level of professionalism, respect for her colleagues, and has emphasized that with hard work, success is inevitable. Through her leadership, I observed a team working hard each day, coming together to provide patients of Bushwick and its surroundings with optimum care. The staff has all been helpful and welcomed me with open arms; they have shown willingness to pass on their knowledge and expertise in the field. The experience I have gained there in the different rotations, whether it was in family planning, gynecology, obstetrics, or high-risk pregnancy, has given me tremendous exposure and motivated me to continue with my journey of achieving my ultimate goal of becoming a Certified Nurse Midwife. I have observed a few procedures such as endometrial biopsy; the nurse did a wonderful job teaching the patient about what to expect post procedure (example placing great emphasis on reporting to the ER if she experiences pain, fever, chills, and vaginal bleeding). I also had my first experience of witnessing a colposcopy(Colpo) being done. The nurse obtained informed consent from the patient before the procedure began. My experience in the high-risk area is immeasurable. The patients seen there include pregnant women with thyroid problems, mentally ill pregnant women on medication, patients with high blood pressure, gestational diabetes patients, and women with past and preterm issues to name a few. Another experience that I learned a lot from was the breast-feeding class that I attended, which the WIC peer support team held.

I have come to learn to appreciate the Daily Management System(DMS) briefing at 9:15 every Wednesday morning that I was present. Listening to the praise given to nurses by their patients gives me as a student a sense of joy; knowing these hardworking nurses are truly making a difference to the Bushwick community. To the staff, I would like to thank them for taking time off from their busy patient care day to pass on knowledge to  me. I would encourage any student who desires to gain professional experience with a variety of patient populations and women’s health issues, to choose Woodhull Women’s Health Clinic. It is an extremely valuable experience. Personally, I hope in the future to be part of such a wonderful team.
