Course Syllabus: 20th Century Dress and Culture

Course Description: Individuals must graspĀ the intricate relationship between fashion and culture and its historical development. This course investigates the influence of historical periods on clothing style and construction. Analytical techniques are introduced to students, enabling them to assess how culture, economics, politics, and religion shape prevailing styles over time. Each participant is assigned or allowed to choose specific clothing items, allowing them to trace the evolution of style, trends, and fashion. The course also acquaints students with essential terminology crucial for discussing the comprehensive history of the fashion industry. The course explores issues affecting the fashion industry through readings, videos, discussions, and field trips and incorporates guest speakers to establish connections with the local fashion scene.
