Language is one of the most important and complex things humans use to communicate. As we grow , we began to learn exactly how complicated and multilayered the use of language is .
This is perfectly described in Mother Tongue by Amy Tan , the writer talks about the different types of English’s she uses and how and where she changes them. As the grandchild of immigrant parents , i can say that I can relate to almost every experience she describes in the text. For example , when Amy Tan wrote “You should know my mothers expressive command of English belies how much she actually understands” and then listed a few of her moms habits like reading the Forbes report , speaking to her stockbroker daily and listening to wall street week , she was attempting to clear any doubt about there may be about her mothers intelligence level. I can relate to this because my grandfather was the smartest person I knew , he worked as a structural engineer for SKANSKA and yes there was a slight language barrier that showed whenever he attempted to express himself but that was absolutely not to be confused with illiteracy or a lack of intelligence. There is a very common misconception about non native English speakers that there is a lack of intelligence on their part which is why they aren’t able to culturally assimilate but this is very far from the truth . The truth is, many immigrants and non native speakers cant get rid of their accent because accents and pronunciations are learned through imitation , and not having people around that possess this accent you are attempting to achieve makes it almost impossible. If their words and feelings are cohesive and their messages are adequately conveyed every time, what’s the point of trying to assimilate? Wouldn’t that defeat the purpose of diversity?
Maybe the world should become a more multilingual place , after all, we are in the age of inclusivity.
